UVA’s Cake on the Lawn: A Flourishing Tradition

On October 18th, 2026, over 100 student bakers gathered on UVA’s famous lawn with cakes in hand and hungry stomachs. Picnic tables were set up across the lawn and packed with delicious and exceptionally decorated cakes. Hundreds of students were able to sample any cake they wanted in a well-organized system of time slots. A student band played in the background, and students gathered on picnic blankets to enjoy their cake. As a first-year, I found that the event was so well run and bustling with activity that I assumed it must be a longstanding tradition. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

How Cake on the Lawn Started

Cake on the Lawn started in October 2025 after a fourth-year student at UVA got inspired by similar events she saw on social media. What started as a fun idea for an event has grown into a way for students to come together, enjoy some homemade treats, and support important causes. While the event is definitely a great excuse to eat cake, it is also about bringing people together and giving back to the community. One of the coolest parts of Cake on the Lawn is that it supports a different cause through its partnerships with non-profit organizations.

My Experience as a Baker

Last year, the event partnered with the One Love Foundation, which focuses on educating people about healthy relationships. This year, UVA’s Fight Cancer CIO helped promote and run the event, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. It is a great example of how students can turn something fun into an opportunity to make a difference. Fundraising does not always have to mean hosting a formal event or asking people to donate money. Sometimes, it can be as simple as getting people together to bake and eat cake!

I participated in this year’s event as a baker, which meant baking a cake with my friends and paying $5 for a ticket.

More Than Just Cake

Students could also participate as cake enjoyers by buying a $15 ticket to get a chance to try all the different cakes. I liked that there were different ways to get involved, whether you wanted to spend time baking with friends or just show up and enjoy the desserts.

For me, baking the cake was part of the fun because I got to do something different with my friends while also supporting a good cause. It was also exciting to see what everyone else made and how much creativity went into the event.

Beyond the cake itself, the event creates a fun and welcoming atmosphere on Grounds. College can get pretty busy with classes, assignments, clubs, and everything else going on, so it is nice to have an event where students can take a break and just enjoy themselves.

A Sweet Way to Give Back

Cake on the Lawn gives people a chance to hang out with friends, meet other students, and try something new, all while supporting a meaningful cause. It combines something as simple as baking with the bigger goal of making a positive impact in the community. If you missed out this time, I definitely recommend checking out the next Cake on the Lawn!

Why You Should Check It Out

Whether you want to bake a cake, buy a ticket, or just come see what the event is about, there are plenty of ways to participate. You do not have to be an amazing baker to be part of it, and even just showing up helps support the event. Cake on the Lawn brings community, charity, a fun atmosphere, and, best of all, cake to UVA. As it continues to grow each year, I think it has the potential to become a fun tradition that more students look forward to. At the end of the day, it shows that giving back does not have to be complicated. Sometimes, all it takes is a few friends, a homemade cake, and a good reason to get everyone together.
