How to Stop Yourself From Checking Your Phone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

Phone addiction can make it a lot more difficult to get work done by breaking your concentration and forcing your brain to multitask. Here are some helpful tips to stop you from getting distracted as often.(Photo by Rahul Chakraborty on Unsplash)

1.   Put your phone on sleep mode

Putting your phone on Do Not Disturb will turn off those pesky notifications that pull your attention from your work. You can even set an alarm for yourself for when you want to check your phone again.

2.   Stash your phone in another room

If I’ve learned anything in college, it is to use my laziness to my advantage. If reaching for your phone takes more energy exertion than normal, you are less likely to get up to use it.

3.   Give yourself a set time to check your phone, and a set time limit

Cutting out your phone cold turkey is difficult, and can sometimes result in a “social media binge.” It always helps me to avoid checking my phone if I know that I have a time planned to look at it.(Photo by Mikayla Mallek on Unsplash)

4.   Make your phone black and white

This nifty trick can make your social media look less enticing, making you less interested in checking it. To do this on an iPhone, go to Settings > General > Accessibility >Display Accommodations >Color Filters. Switch Color Filters on and select Grayscale, and you’re good to go!

5.   Use an app to find out how many times you check your phone

Apps like Moment and Checky can tell you how many times you unlock and use your phone. Using one of these apps, and setting a goal for yourself to lower your phone use, could be helpful in keeping you focused.

6.   Delete your social media apps from your phone altogether

If you’re feeling bold and/or desperate to finish some work, remove the possibility of checking social media completely. You can always download the apps again after your assignment is finished.(Photo by rawpixel.com on Unsplash)
