A Defense of Insta Poetry

Art doesn’t have to be complex, complicated, or confusing to be meaningful. Feminine IG poetry is often ridiculed and turned into memes for its simplicity. The majority of critics claim that this poetry relies too heavily on elementary literary techniques. My response is: So what? We stare at Pollock’s paint streaks and interpret them as a reflection of war chaos. We put Dr. Suess quotes on our college graduation caps. We’d rather listen to Kendrick in the car, even knowing that Tchaikovsky put more time into his craft. Every day, we all make decisions that celebrate simplicity, yet we refuse to accept art in the same standard that we hold life. We’re absolutely fixed in this unfair mindset. Sure, IG poetry is nothing like the works of Frost, Dickinson, or Angelou. Sometimes, its simplicity is just better.
