As we go into 2018, we’re already surrounded by politics: political turmoil, political movements, and political advocacy. We’ve seen our entertainment sphere turned upside down in the last few months by the brave women of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. If there was any time to step up for what you believe in, it would be now.

Here at HerCampus, one of the things we believe in most is empowering college women to “speak their truth:” to share their experiences and speak their minds. That’s why we’ve picked 5 girl-empowering, truth speaking CIOs for you to check out at the activities fair!

HerCampus at the University of Virginia

Obviously, our first choice is HCUVA! HerCampus is the #1 online magazine for college women! We write weekly articles on everything from celebrities to skin care to fashion trends to current events and opinion pieces. The best thing about HCUVA is that college women can write about whatever they want with full support from the team and HC Headquarters! We’re all about speaking your mind and sharing your experiences with the world, and we want YOU to join our team of amazing college women! If you’re interested in writing for us, email our Editors in Chief, Summer Harvey (svh8b@virginia.edu) and Sarah Vanlandingham (sv2pq@virginia.edu).

GirlUp at the University of Virginia

Girl Up, a United Nations Foundation Program, is an amazing organization on Grounds that aims to advocate for and empower young girls, locally and globally. Their mission statement is to “empower individuals on UVa’s campus to become involved through education, advocacy, public service, and fundraising to allow adolescent girls around the world to reach their full potential.” (from their @UVA site) The five core pillars of Girl Up are education, health, freedom from violence, leadership, and being formally recognized by government. If you’re interested in empowering girls to become the superheroes they’re meant to be, check out this CIO!

Hoos Open to Preventing Eating disorders (HOPE)

Hoos Open to Preventing Eating disorders, or HOPE, is an incredible CIO that engages in the UVA and Charlottesville community to bring awareness to eating disorders and disordered eating, as well as promoting healthy body images. They are the epitome of the #bodiposi movement, and such a wonderful group to have on Grounds. While they are not a counseling service, they also provide resources for those who are interested. It’s so important to talk about mental health, eating disorders, and body image and HOPE is set on ending the stigma!

The United Nations Women USNC at the University of Virginia

The United Nations Women USNC at UVA is similar to Girl Up in the sense that they work with the UN on women’s issues, but the UN Women USNC is awesome if you want to focus your efforts into protecting the rights of underprivileged, oppressed women worldwide. According to their @UVA site, The United Nations Women USNC at UVA “works to give more authority to women by helping improve women’s economic security and social rights, abate violence against women, reduce HIV/AIDS among women, and give them a stronger voice in the workplace, and government.” While gender equality is of utmost importance worldwide, it’s important to recognize the hardships impoverished, oppressed women in marginalized communities experience, and advocate for their rights, safety, and wellbeing! Take a look at this CIO the next time you’re in the mood to make a difference on small and big scales.

The Health Education in Rural Areas (HERA) Initiative is a public health organization on Grounds “whose mission is to promote the sustainable development and growth of global, rural communities.” One their main focuses is reproductive health and education, which is crucial to a woman’s safety and bodily autonomy. They hold fun events( like a Masquerade Ball) to raise money for sustainable public health research and are active in the UVA and the Charlottesville communities. If “my body, my choice” is your mantra, this is the CIO for you.
