Spring has finally begun! Time to get a fresh start. The perfect time to clean out everything and at the same time get some peace of mind. Spring cleaning can be a great motivator going into the new season, but starting the process requires motivation itself… and a game plan.

WHERE TO START

You want to start by getting the hardest part out of the way, and yes, I’m talking about the dreaded closet. Every girl knows picking the OOTD is a messy process that requires frantically trying on multiple outfits every morning as you rush out the door. Prepping your closet for spring can give you a fresh start and make this process a lot easier.

OUT WITH THE OLD IN WITH THE NEW

The first step to getting a clean and functional closet is getting rid of the pieces in your wardrobe that live hanging in the darkness of your closet and have rarely or NEVER seen the light of day. These pieces are standing in your way, cluttering your closet and just wasting your time as you try it on every morning always hoping today will be the day you decide to wear it out. So toss these pieces in a bag without a second thought and send it off to your local thrift shop. Places like Plato’s Closet will buy clothes from you for ⅓ their price, and websites like Poshmark are great places to sell clothes if you’re looking to get some cash. After all, one girl’s trash is another’s treasure! While you’re dropping off your donations at the thrift shop or looking to spend your new cash, thrift shop for yourself! Thrifting is an affordable way to get super cute spring pieces without breaking the bank. To avoid getting new clothes that you won’t wear, think of how you would style each piece as you shop with items you already have, or shop for full outfits for the same price as a bunch of random clothes.

ORGANIZING

Once your closet has only clothes you know you’ll wear, find a way to organize your pieces so they’re easy to view and quick to find. Whether this means folding or hanging your jeans, color-coding, or organizing by style, find what method works best for you and stick to it!

Getting hangers of the same color is a simple hack that really makes a closet look put together. You can also use your hangers to keep track of which items you’re wearing, making it easier to spot clothes that need to go. Place all of your hangers with the end of hook facing you instead of wall (backwards). Then, each time you wash and hang up clothes that you wore, place the hanger on properly. This will allow you to detect unworn clothes by seeing which hangers are still on backwards by the next time you clean out your closet.

SAVING SPACE

A small closet may seem like a recipe for disaster, but baskets and small storage drawers are a great way to save space, leaving your closet clean and cute all season. Baskets are perfect for storing accessories like scarves, hats, bags, or even shoes, allowing you to quickly grab the final accessory for your outfit. Small storage drawers are lifesavers when it comes to organizing. They’re affordable and can store a lot in such a small space.
