Making College Your Home Away From Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UTSA chapter.

As much as we hate to admit it, us college students tend to feel home-sick after being dropped off on move-in day. Although we love not having to live under our parents roof, having no rules, and being able to go out whenever and wherever we want, we all have those days were we miss home a bit more than usual. Whether you live in the dorms or in an apartment, here are some ways you can make college feel more like home if you’re struggling to do so / are starting college in the spring.

Right before moving out, it’s a good idea to grab a few things from home that mean a lot to you. Whether that’s taking your childhood teddy bear or your fave book, just go ahead and throw it on top of your mountain of dorm supplies and essentials. Since we will be living in a foreign space for the entire school year, it’s important to be as comfortable as possible during that time.

You should also take anything that will make your room more cozy since it’s the place where you’ll be sleeping, relaxing, and studying in for the next year. When we do these things, we want to be somewhere comfortable, and your room will be this place. A few things that can help you achieve maximum coziness are hanging up Christmas lights around your room or piling your bed high with pillows to bury yourself in after pulling an all-nighter.

One of the very first things I do when moving into a new place is hang up picture of friends and family on my walls. You know you’ll see those friends and family members soon, but pictures will help you remember how much fun you had with them and the even more fun memories you’ll make in your college years to come. As you continue going out with friends, you’ll be able to add new pictures, making it a little easier to get through a tough day. Looking at my pictures on my wall reminds me of all the hard work my friends and I went through trying to get into our dream schools and also the hard work my family has done for me. This encouraged me to stay positive as I waited for move-in day.

Possibly one of the most important things to do when moving into your new place is to make friends with your roommate(s) and classmates. Most likely, your new roommate(s) and friends feel the same way as you do since they are in the same boat as you. During college, you’ll meet some of the most amazing people, which includes friends you’ll keep in contact with even after graduation.

That’s why it’s important to be as comfortable as possible. Make yourself at home and enjoy your college years. After all, you only get to go through them once!

Howdy! I'm Cassie and currently a senior studying Environmental Science getting little sleep throughout the semester. I love spending time with my dog, taking naps when I have time, and hiking the beautiful outdoors:)
