Sooo You Want to Get in Shape? 6 Tips For Getting Fit With the New Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

The new school year is just as reforming a time as New Years.  Resolutions are made: I won’t skip class, I’ll study at least a week in advance for tests, I’ll work out more, etc. As school begins, collegiette women find themselves trying to transform their lifestyle.  One of the many changes you may be trying to make will probably include staying healthy and active.  We’re blessed to have an amazing Student Life Center on our campus that uses the immense amount of money we pay for tuition count as our *FREE* membership.  You’ve got the location, now what? Here are six simple tips for starting and keeping a workout routine throughout the school year.

Go With Friends

Everyone is different, but I know that working out with my friends helps me accomplish my workout better than if I was alone.  When you bring a friend you have someone to push you to complete your hour or so of physical activity wholeheartedly.  It also helps that you have someone to talk to when you need a water break.

Cute Clothes

This might sound like a weird one but hear me out! I used to workout in oversized t-shirts and Soffe shorts and let me tell you, I did not feel my best.  I’ve now invested in some Lululemonn tops, Nike sports bras, and PINK leggings and it made a huge difference in my self-confidence.  I now wear my workout clothes to school so that I can’t use the excuse of not wanting to carry my gym clothes around campus.

Great Music

Whether you’re working out with friends or not, having a great playlist to pump you up can transform the way you feel about your workout.  No one wants to listen to the sound of boys grunting and weights clanging around when you can have classic rock or dance remixes pumping in your ears.

Know What You’re Doing

Getting to the gym is half the battle, but once you’re there you might not know what to do! I recommend looking up workouts online before you go to the gym so that you go into it knowing exactly what you’re doing.  It will help you schedule your time as well because you won’t be aimlessly looking around wondering what to do next.

Schedule time

If I simply write in my planner “work out”, it’s not going to happen.  I need to specifically budget an hour or so into my day when I know I can solely focus on completing my workout.  When you schedule working out into your week you’ll be better prepared for it and can’t use the excuse that you just haven’t got the time!

Set Goals

Setting goals for yourself can help you keep your workouts on track.  Your goal can be anything, as long as it is something you truly want to work to accomplish! Some examples include losing a certain amount of weight, working out a certain amount of days in a row, or slowly adding more weight to your workouts.  Once you go into your workouts knowing what you want to accomplish you’ll have an overall happier and positive experience.
