She Means Business! Ryann Gill: Business Scholars

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Ryann Gill, a freshman at the University of Utah has big dreams and is starting out well. In high school she was heavily involved in almost every aspect and just because college is a little bigger, she isn’t letting anything stand in her way. From being an active member of her sorority to being on Business Scholars, Ryann is ready for anything.

HC: What is Business Scholars?

Ryann: Business Scholars is a program within in the Business school that is used to propel you into the Business school faster and help you discover your major. There are different sections, but you’re able to explore each major for three weeks to determine if you want to go into say, marketing or business management. You get to go on trips, so each section goes to a different place. I went to Portland and we are gearing up to go to Atlanta in the spring!

HC: How did you get involved with the business scholars?

Ryann: I did DECA, which was a marketing club and I did Future Business Leaders of America and representatives from Business Scholars came and spoke at my competitions about applying so I applied!

HC: So why did you want to get involved?

Ryann: I wanted to get involved because it is an opportunity to network in the business school faster than I otherwise would and I wanted to explore my major and be 100% sure I picked the right major for myself.

HC: What is your favorite part of Business Scholars?Ryann: My favorite part is probably the people you’re with, you’re with competitive and happy individuals who want to make you succeed and want to see themselves succeed, so we are all extremely driven to do our group projects well and show up on time and have fun in the process!

HC: How has being involved on campus improved your freshman year?

Ryann: Business Scholars has really improved my involvement on campus! I feel more connected because within the Business School, it is a group of 200 students that are essentially always together, we hang out together and have formed friendships. I’m also in a sorority and I volunteer at the Bennion Center!

HC: What are your goals within the Business Scholars program?

Ryann: My goal is to be able to dynamically learn in my classes, I’m able to pick my major my freshman year and use the Business Scholars to have smaller classes the rest of my collegiate years! I’m able to really dig into learning about learning and learning about knowledge.

HC: What is your dream job?

Ryann: My dream job would be working for UNICEF and building water wells in Eastern Africa.

HC: What drives you do that?

Ryann: In high school, one of my debate topics was discussing about poverty within Africa and Asia and specifically Eastern Africa, I learned about the poverty and need. I like the idea of trying to find a water solution because 2.8 million people are without sanitary water everyday, that’s a crazy number!
