Self-love.

Easy to want, hard to get.

With society’s constant pressure for women to look absolutely perfect (which most of the time, their definition of perfect is a 6’0 ft, size 2 super model), it’s hard for women to love themselves with constantly thinking about all the “flaws” society says they have.

Too fat. Too skinny. Too much makeup. Not enough makeup. Too short. Too tall. Too petite. Too stocky. Too heavy breasted. Too flat chested. Too curvy. Too narrow. Too ugly. Too nerdy. Too sporty.

With critiques like that from society, it’s no wonder some girls are so insecure about themselves and constantly point out their own flaws.

I’m not going to lie, I’ve been through this mentality many times. Whether it’s being rejected by a guy for another girl, seeing no girls my size on magazine covers, or being considered overweight for my height, it makes me wonder if there’s something wrong with me… if I’m imperfect.

But you know what? Maybe being imperfect is exactly what makes me perfect. I’ve recently established a new mindset where I’m going to learn how to love myself and all of my imperfections. My way of doing this is finding inspiring self-love mantras and writing them down in my journal. Below are some of my favorite ones:

  • I am not a drop in the ocean. I am the entire ocean in one drop.

  • I am not beautiful like you, I am beautiful like me.

  • The way you speak to yourself matters.

  • Don’t wait for someone to bring you flowers. Plant your own garden and decorate your own soul.

  • I am enough. Who I am is enough. What I do is enough, and what I have is enough.

  • Today I choose to believe in myself.

  • I am love. I am loveable. I am loving.

If you aren’t into mantras, try listening to some self-positive music like “Love Myself,” by Hailee Steinfeld, “Rise Up,” by Andra Day or my personal favorite, “Sorry Not Sorry,” by Demi Lovato.

Put away the scale, put down the magazines, stop spending hours looking in the mirror pick pointing your insecurities.

Focus on spending time with ones that empower you and do things that make you happy.

Start loving yourself because as the great RuPaul would say, if you can’t love yourself, how the hell is anyone else suppose to?

Hi, I'm Kelli Carmack! I am a senior Mass Communications Major at USFSP with a minor in Art History. I'm currently the Co-President of Her Campus at USFSP, a leadership role I hold dear to my heart. I have some pretty big dreams for myself. I plan on getting into the broadcast journalism and/or entertainment field. I hope to one day be the next Barbara Walters, sitting down with prominent people and asking them those hard-hitting questions. While I'm not busy focusing on my career goals, I enjoy going to the beach, painting and reading!
A Mass Communications Major with a passion for inspiring others.
