Wellness Wednesday: All the Benefits of Kickboxing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Kickboxing is a great way to spice up your routine workout schedule, or even as part of your weekly routine. Kickboxing is a high calorie burning exercise. A one hour kickboxing class can burn between 600 and 800 calories, depending on body composition. Kickboxing is such a high calorie workout because it works the whole body. It constantly engages the core and with a variety of punches and kicks burns fat and tones the whole body.

Kickboxing provides a wonderful way to relieve stress, frustration, and aggression. It is a high calorie workout, so you’re constantly moving. In my first kickboxing class I was told to visualize someone when I was punching. You can imagine your professor who never seems to prepare you for the exams, the ex-boyfriend you ran into on campus, the roommate who never does her dishes, or whoever is on your last nerve. Releasing frustration in a healthy way like kickboxing is much better than other ways of expressing anger.

Kickboxing is practical as well. USF does a lot to strive for a safe environment, but not all obstacles can be avoided. As young females, it is important for us to know how to defend ourselves. While kickboxing does not substitute for a self defense class, it does teach you different types of punches and kicks that can be used in an emergency case of an attacker. Kickboxing and knowing these skills provides an immense amount of confidence and power to women as well. USF offers kickboxing classes at the rec center, so try one out this week!
