Substance Abuse Among College Fraternities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Greek Life: what half of every incoming freshman class cannot wait to be a part of. Hot guys, attractive girls, endless partying…what part of that doesn’t sound like a good time?

Over the past couple of years, sororities and fraternities have been on the news for hazing. As hazing is still an issue at some schools it now seems to be that drinking and drugs are a much larger issue across the nation.

Earlier this month a female student at Rutgers University attended a party at the Delta Kappa Epsilon House. After a night of partying, her friends rushed this 19 year old student to the hospital because she became distressed. After arriving at the hospital the young Rutgers student was pronounced dead due to alcohol related activity.

During the same weekend as the incident at Rutgers University, a frat house at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was set under investigation for putting roofies female party guests drinks. Police were called to the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house to assist an intoxicated female student.

That same night the police were called back to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to tend to female students who could not stand or walk back to their dorm rooms. After some investigation, police noticed these females in distress to have either red or black X’s on the backs of their hands. Female party goers were offered to purchase an $8 all-access card which gave them access to bars set up throughout the frat house. The bars inside the frat house were managed by the members of Tau Kappa Epsilon.

A female partygoer informed police that the bartenders would take the girls cups behind the bar when making their drinks. Many of the females interviewed admitted to experiencing a weird sensation prior to blacking out or noticed a cloudy liquid in their drinks. Investigation continues as Tau Kappa Epsilon continues to stay silent on the case.

While substance abuse is a present issue among Greek life, the most important thing is for colleges to take steps to prevent any of these situations from happening again.
