We are well into the spring semester, and the dreadful midterm weeks are already here. Here are some reminders as we enter an especially stressful time in the semester:

Remember to rest

I know. It feels like we have all heard this self-care tip a million times. Even though the work you have to do seems like it’s towering over you, you cannot pour from an empty cup. So, please find time to rest during midterms. Rest doesn’t have to look like sleep, although it very much can be. I define rest as anything that helps you recharge. This can be sleeping, watching your favorite show, practicing skincare, or pleasure reading.

Practice time management

I hate to sound like a parent but practicing time management skills during exam season can really help you persevere without feeling burned out. Procrastination only stresses us out and leaves us feeling overwhelmed at the end of the day. Again, I hate to sound like a parent scolding you for leaving things to the last minute, but spacing out studying will help you feel less stressed and more prepared for those big midterm assignments. My favorite way to practice time management is to use a planner and allot periods of time for each of my assignments throughout the day.

Say your mantras

Oftentimes during exam season, we feel overwhelmed and extremely stressed out. Repeating mantras can remind you how capable and strong you are. You can repeat these mantras on the way to class, in the mirror, or during meditation. Some of my favorite mantras include:

I am capable.

I am loved. I am worthy.

My worth is not placed in my academic success.

Whatever is meant for me, will find me.

I am exactly where I need to be.

Find support from your friends

There is a good chance that you are not the only one who feels overwhelmed by midterm exams. Confide with your friends and classmates! It may help you feel better if you know that others are experiencing similar feelings. Then, you can set up study sessions with your friends, so that you are all kept accountable by studying together.

Of course, there are many other ways to prepare for exam season; these are just a few tips and reminders that I use so that I don’t feel burned out, especially since we have another half of the semester to go. Don’t forget to take care of yourself throughout the next couple of weeks!
