Self Care When You’re Sick In College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

It’s that time of year when everyone is getting sick. Here are some of the ways to deal with sickness in college.

Take a Hot Shower

This is one of my favorite things to do when I’m sick. Not only does it feel refreshing but it helps loosen up all your congestion. I prefer taking baths but in college, you can’t be too picky. The minute I start to feel sick, I go straight for a hot shower.

Put on Pajamas and Watch a Movie

After hopping out of a hot shower I slip right into my comfy jammies. I usually opt for something fleecy because it keeps all the warmth in which is great when you have the chills. I then spend about an hour searching for a movie and when I finally settle on one, I turn off the lights and curl up under the covers.

Make Soup

This is one of the most classic feel-better tips but I swear it works. Soup is super easy to make in college because you can just throw it in a bowl and cook it in the microwave. There is no better feeling then slurping up chicken broth when you’re feeling under the weather.

Catch Up On Sleep

One of my all-time favorite things to do when I’m sick (or even when I’m not) is to sleep. Whether it’s going to bed early to get an extra hour or two of sleep or taking a midday nap, getting extra sleep is always super important when you’re sick because it gives the body time to recover. It also gives you a brief break from the sickness you’ve been experiencing.

Call Your Mom

When I’m sick, all I want is for my mom to take care of me. However, when you’re at college it’s kinda up to you. This is the time when you have to start being an adult. But your mom is still only a phone call away. I remember my freshman year I puked in the dorm bathroom at three in the morning and I called my mom and even though she was asleep, she woke up and talked to me until I felt better and was ready to go back to sleep.

Do you feel better yet? Well, get started on this list!
