Christmastime is finally here and as the new year approaches we can’t help but think about our New Year’s Resolutions. We also can’t help but remember the ones we didn’t fulfill last year, those we will probably rewrite on this year’s list. Whether it’s quitting smoking or hitting the gym, everyone has a different resolution; however there are a few resolutions that every collegiettes should make this New Year:

1. Put down your phone for a while

We get it; we live in an era where technology lets us communicate instantly. We can see the news, text a friend, watch a show, all through our smart phones. Unfortunately, this also means that we usually pay more attention to our devices rather than our surroundings. So this year, put down your phone for a few minutes and take notice of the person beside you. Have a conversation, watch the clouds, or maybe just take a deep breath. You can take that selfie later!

2. Volunteer

College is hard, there’s no doubt about it. With exams, projects, and presentations to prepare for it may seem like we don’t have much time on our hands; not to mention our other extracurricular activities. Sometimes, though, we forget how blessed we are. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and to remind us how fortunate we are. Whether you go to a pet shelter, retirement home or a homeless shelter, they’ll be thanking you for taking a little bit of your time and putting a smile on their faces.

3. Read something, anything, every month

Seriously, more reading? Now, I don’t mean class reading material; we get enough of that during the semester! Read something that interests you, whether it’s an article on women’s rights in Saudi Arabia, a romance novel, or the Hunger Games trilogy (which is great, by the way). Point is, reading is a great way to unwind and relieve stress. Besides, whenever we read something we usually learn something new, so major bonus points there!

4. Be who you want to be

Society has always had this idea of how women should look, dress, talk and carry themselves. Fortunately, this ideal is (slowly but surely) weakening thanks to all of us strong women who refuse to subject themselves to anyone. There is no reason for you to look like a model, or to go along with what the “rest of the world thinks”. Speak your mind, wear a dress or jeans or slacks, study and work in what inspires you. If you want to study poetry, by all means do it! Work at NASA? Why not! Be the second female governor or the first female president? Go for it! You should follow your dreams, not anybody else’s. Do it for yourself, because at the end of the day it’s your life and you’re the one who gets to live it.
