Halloween is just around the corner, which means one thing: deciding on a group costume is officially the main topic in the group chat. It sounds easy, right? Well, the real struggle begins when you don’t want to pick something too basic (what if everyone else has the same idea?) or too niche (what if nobody gets the reference?).

Don’t worry, girl, I’ve got you! Whether you’re going for a nostalgic throwback, a classic movie moment, or a costume that will have all eyes on you, here are my top five Halloween costumes I NEED to see friend groups recreate this year.

1. The Barden Bellas

Pitch Perfect is a cult classic, and honestly, I will never get tired of a good Barden Bellas moment. If you and your girls are looking for an easy costume that still gives off cool-girl energy, this one is for you. Bonus points if you recreate one of their iconic performances!

What will you need?

  • Navy blue skirt
  • Navy blue vest
  • White baby tee
  • Yellow handkerchief
  • Black boots

2. Cereal Box Mascots

Lucky Charms

Remember the iconic mascots on your favorite cereal boxes? Think Trix, Tony the Tiger, Cap’n Crunch, and Lucky the Leprechaun. This costume idea is colorful, nostalgic, and perfect for a friend group that wants something fun without spending a fortune.

What will you need?

  • Trix: White tank top and skirt, White Converse sneakers, and bunny ears.
  • Frosted Flakes: Tiger-print top, black skirt, black boots, and tiger ears.
  • Cap’n Crunch: Blue top, white shorts or skirt, white Converse sneakers, and a captain’s hat.
  • Lucky Charms: Green top, gold shorts or skirt, red Converse sneakers, and a green hat.

Want to make it even cuter? Turn your favorite cereal box into a purse! Grab an old bag strap, make holes on each side of the cereal box, and attach the strap to each side of the cereal box. It’s the perfect DIY accessory to complete the look.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

A classic cartoon, a recognizable look, and a costume that works for a last-minute Halloween plan? PERFECT! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are perfect for a friend group that wants a fun, low-effort costume that still makes a statement. Just pick your turtle color and have fun!

What will you need?

  • Green tank top or bralette
  • Green shorts
  • Toy katanas or other (ninja) turtle-inspired accessories
  • Brown belt
  • Black boots or sneakers
  • Blue, red, orange, and purple eye masks to represent Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello

4. The Wizard of Oz

“Follow the Yellow Brick Road. . .” Movie ad for “The Wizard of Oz” in “The Saturday Evening Post,” August 26, 1939.

Some costumes never go out of style, and The Wizard of Oz is definitely one of them. Whether your group wants to recreate the original movie or make it Wicked-themed, this is the perfect way to bring a little movie magic to Halloween. And with so many iconic characters, there’s something for everyone!

What will you need?

  • The Wicked Witch: Black dress, green tights, black boots, and a witch hat.
  • The Tin Man: Silver metallic top and shorts, white boots, and a red heart. DIY the heart and attach it to your top!
  • Dorothy: Blue-and-white gingham dress, white top, white socks, and red shoes. Converse, heels, or sandals- make it your own!
  • Glinda the Good Witch: Pink dress, crown, white shoes, and a DIY magic wand.
  • The Scarecrow: Brown outfit, brown cowboy boots, and a scarecrow hat.
  • The Cowardly Lion: Brown top, light-brown shorts, brown boots, and lion ears.

Everyone gets their own iconic look, but together, the costumes match perfectly!

5. Despicable Me Girls

Despicable Me is one of my favorite movies ever, so I NEED to see this costume happen! Margo, Edith, and Agnes make the perfect trio, especially if everyone in your friend group has a personality that matches one of the girls. Plus, the outfits are recognizable and easy to recreate with things you might already have in your closet.

What will you need?

  • Margo: Olive-green jacket, gray top, brown plaid mini skirt, and red Converse sneakers.
  • Edith: Pink-striped top, red joggers, white UGG-style boots, and a pink-striped beanie.
  • Agnes: Yellow-striped T-shirt, denim overalls, and white sneakers.

And, of course, a little unicorn plushie for Agnes would be the cutest finishing touch!

Now, I need to know: which one are you and your girls choosing this Halloween? I’m ready to see all the Despicable Me girls and Barden Bellas recreations on my feed. Consider this your sign to start planning that group costume, because the best Halloween pictures happen when everyone commits to the theme!

Hi! I’m Amanda Vega, a 19-year-old girl from Puerto Rico, with a love for storytelling, creativity, and all things cinema. I’m currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in Film at Universidad de Puerto Rico-Mayagüez. I’ve always been the kind of person who finds inspiration in the little things, whether it’s a lyric that hits a little too close to home, a scene in a movie that stays with me for days, or a random moment that feels straight out of a movie.

I’m an aspiring performer, writer, and filmmaker who loves bringing stories to life. Throughout high school, I explored my passion for communications, journalism, and film, even getting the chance to work as a TV host and journalist. I’ve also written and directed my own short films, and I’m currently building my own production house, Flíkiti Films, to bring more of my creative ideas to life. Whether I’m behind a camera, writing a script, or simply brainstorming my next project, I’m always looking for new ways to express myself and connect with others through art.

When I’m not working on a creative project or buried in college assignments, you’ll probably find me listening to Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, or TINI, taking pictures, singing, watching movies, or romanticizing the little moments of everyday life. I love writing about film, music, friendships, relationships, personal growth, and the beautiful (and sometimes chaotic) experience of figuring yourself out in your late teens and early 20s. Through Her Campus, I hope to share my thoughts, explore new perspectives, and remind other girls that there’s something special about embracing who you are while figuring out who you want to become.
