It is so easy to be a downer and/or to see the bad in everything that happens because, let’s be real, life can be really crappy sometimes. Being a positive person can be very challenging, but it can also be very rewarding. Having a positive outlook in life will improve your mood, affect how you deal with the struggles life presents you, and improve how people perceive you. Here are some tips for a more positive life.

1. Don’t be a hater.

Again, it is so easy to have a negative view of the bad things that happen to us, but a positive attitude towards them can help us accept and work through them. When we sport a negative attitude, we cannot see beyond that; therefore we are stuck on the same page and think we have no other option than drowning in our frustration or sorrow.

When I was a freshman, I had a negative attitude and felt perpetual hate about being at Colegio, because I originally wanted to study at Sagrado Corazón. It wasn’t until I realized how blessed I was to be here, and changed my mindset, that I stopped feeling so depressed and shy about my life. I decided to seek out enriching opportunities and gain as much experience from them, in the academic environment I’m in, that could help me reach my ultimate goal of being a journalist.

2. Let go of negative people.

Having negative people around you is just as toxic as actually being a negative person. We have to cut out people that do not add anything good to our lives. Having pessimistic thoughts will only bring negative things to your life. Don’t let other people’s negative attitude interfere with your route to happiness or interrupt the chances you get to improve your life.

3. Changing your mindset will be hard.

Three words; take it easy. Having a different way to approach situations—and people—will be difficult to change. However,it will improve your life a 100%.

4. Love and accept yourself.

If you believe in yourself, understand your worth and accept who you are; even with your flaws, you will never have to be a hater again. Know what you are capable of and go after what you want in life. This would not only make you happier, but you will cease to have a negative outlook of life. It’s a challenging step, but if you really want to, you can achieve it. You don’t have to be completely happy with how your life looks like right now, but know that you can change it and work hard for it to be better.

5. Don’t compare yourself with others.

If you keep comparing your body or your success with others’, you will never be happy. Don’t be jealous of other people’s anything; be happy by your own standards and do what you love no matter what people say. Don’t lose yourself wishing you were someone else.
