Laura Williams: Independent, Strong & Feminist- Member Spotlight

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNT chapter.

Across from me, dressed in a white and black plaid shirt, paired with a pair of black slacks and some cute black heels, sat Laura Williams. She seemed poised, as always. We were both a bit uncomfortable due to the fact that this was our first time really having an actual conversation. We had never really sat down and talked, only exchanged a few hi’s and how’s it going here and there. After exchanging a few laughs and irrelevant little details, I began with my set of questions. Laura Lane Williams is a sophomore majoring in business management. She is a part of the special events teams for the HC chapter here at the University of North Texas. A special thanks to her hubby for encouraging her to join our HC chapter, so she would have the opportunity to have a sisterhood. We are super lucky to have someone so hard-working, dedicated and intelligent as a part of our family.

She is the middle child of 3. She has an older brother, and a younger sister. Laura lost her father when she was a little girl and her mother was unable to provide for her family due to her disabilities, which led Laura to mature and really become an adult at such a young age to be able to provide for herself and her siblings, and to become the stone that held the stability within her family. Having faced many hardships in her life at just the young age of 21, I can genuinely say that with the 45 minutes I was able to really sit down and converse with her, she is one of the strongest most driven woman I have came across in my lifetime.                                                           Aside from her challenges, she still thrives and is a hard-working independent woman. She has this drive that shines from within her. You are able to see the determination and hunger she has to succeed and become someone. When I asked what from her past is what drives her to better herself, she replied with, “my family.” You can just read her body language when she stated that, you can feel that truthfully and wholeheartedly that it truly is her family.

A few questions later, when asked about “one thing you are extremely passionate about and could spend hours talking about” came to the air, the answer I received was women’s rights. The way she talked about it afterwards, when i asked questions about it, you could see the passion it brought to her eyes and face. She was saying nothing but strong facts that had to do with women’s rights, so I feel sorry for whoever decides they want to argue with her otherwise.
