The Art of Affirmation

Speak your dreams into existence and the universe will attract the right circumstances and conditions for it to be realized.” -unknown

As humans, we’re often inclined to dwell on things we don’t have, places we feel we won’t get and dreams we feel that we won’t accomplish. Recently, I read a great book by Rhonda Byrne called “The Secret” that changed my entire outlook on life.

We always see how DJ Khaled speaks to his son, Asahd, telling him that he IS the greatest and that he IS a mogul and it’s pretty comical. In reality, however, those words are merely affirmation and have potential to bring those exact things into fruition. Words of affirmation are defined as “the assertion that something exists or is true.”

In “The Secret,” Byrne makes it simple and plain: your mind and your words are the most powerful elements to a better life. Use them wisely. Negative thoughts attract negative circumstances and positive thoughts will bring you more than you could’ve ever imagined.

It’s more than okay to give yourself time to mope, grieve or feel bad, but don’t choose to stay in that forever!

Whether you’re religious or not, the “secret” applies and can work for everyone. After going through one of the roughest patches I’d ever been in, I told myself I had to make a change. For me. I forced myself to come out of my room, began to think positively and say thank you for things I hadn’t yet acquired. In a matter of months I grew closer to God, went from a job I absolutely hated to two that I wouldn’t trade for the world and encountered people on a daily basis that kept my spirits uplifted. All by putting into the universe that my life would do a complete 180!

If you’re looking for somewhere to start, write down a list of things that you want to accomplish this month, form sentences affirming that you WILL achieve them and recite them every day as if they’re already real. You must visualize and rehearse your future for it to come into fruition. Believe that you will be happy, believe that you will be in your dream career and believe that everything will work in your favor in the end.

Here are a few more simple words of affirmation for those who are new to the law of attraction:

  • My life is just beginning.
  • I am at peace with all that has happened, is happening, and will happen.
  • Today, I abandon my old habits and take up new, more positive ones.
  • I radiate beauty, charm and grace.
  • I wake up today with strength in my heart and clarity in my mind.
  • I am a powerhouse; I am indestructible.
  • My obstacles are moving out of my way; my path is carved toward greatness.

Dig deep and find it in yourself to say these things when you start to feel doubt or sadness about anything happening in your life. I hope these practices bring you happiness, clarity and overall wellness.

With love,

I am currently in my junior year at the University of North Texas' Frank W. & Sue Mayborn School of Journalism. After trying out a multitude of incompatible majors and minors, I fell in love with digital & print journalism. I am also minoring in marketing and African-American studies, which stimulates my interest in structuring promotional programs, product development, as well as Black culture, identity and representation in the United States. When I am not swamped with schoolwork, I immerse myself in reading, listening to music, working out and shopping. A few of my biggest dreams include producing a well-renowned magazine, pursuing freelance photography and becoming a documentary filmmaker.
