Pros and Cons of Campus in the Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

Winter is not my favorite season by any means, but that doesn’t mean it’s all bad. In fact, I know quite a large number of people who love winter. Their Instagram accounts are full of pictures of snow, snowmen, and every typical winter pose you can think of. My Instagram is definitely not composed of those. It would probably be more accurate if I said you might see a picture of snow captioned, “Great, I guess I’m stuck inside freezing my butt off again.”. While I do think those Winter-lovers out there are a little crazy, we all have our own tastes. So for those of you looking for more reasons to love winter as a college student and those of you that want support in your hatred of the freezing season, here’s a list of pros and cons:

Pros:

Everything looks like a winter wonderland after it snows.

You can cover up your bad hair day with a hat and no one will question you.

Snow days are more likely

The “bad weather” excuse is a believable way to get out of class

More excuses to drink warm beverages such as hot cocoa, coffee, tea, and cider.

No one can judge you for staying in and catching up on your latest book or tv obsession.

Cons:

Walking to campus is like trekking across the Arctic.

Driving for a commuter student is treacherous.

Looking cute and staying warm is hard to juggle.

When school is canceled, assignments are usually still due.

You have to get up earlier to account for weather if you’re driving or walking

Going outside with wet hair is a definite no-no.

Now, we can’t do much to change the weather, but there are a lot of things we can do to make it better. Personally, I cope by wearing a comfy sweatshirt 24/7, drinking lots and lots of tea and cocoa, cuddling up with warm blankets to binge Netflix, and of course, avoiding all my responsibilities that could result in me being cold or having to go outside.
