There is a fun and exciting event coming to the UNL campus! This February will have the first “Exploring our Roots” event, sponsored by Define America, Latino Graduate Student Association, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. This is a week full of events celebrating and discussing our diversity on campus. Movies, poetry and art displays, and important discussions will be held for all to enjoy and learn from. This event allows students to express their heritage and embrace the heritage and backgrounds of others.

Exploring Our Roots will take place from February 25th through March 1st.

Sunday, February 25th. The first day will feature an art showcase, with pieces form people in the community as well as students. follow the link below to submit your art. This event celebrates the beauty and intricacies from all different cultures.

Monday, February 26th. The second day features a screening of Meet The Patels. The South Asian Student Association co-sponsors this event that will be held in the Nebraska Union Auditorium at 6:30pm. Meet The Patels details the struggle of a south Asian man who lives in America who must deal with arranged marriage.

Tuesday, February 27th. The third day features another film screening. This time the film is co-sponsored with the African Student Association and is called Am I Too African to be American? This documentary delves into the struggle of women who identify culturally as both American and African. This screening will be held at 6:30pm in the Nebraska Union Auditorium.

Wednesday, February 28th. The fourth day includes a panel called “How Did I Get Here” made up of professional individuals who represent minorities in their field. They will answer questions and discuss how they overcame challenges they encountered. This will run from 6-9pm in the Nebraska Union ballroom.

Thursday, March 1st. The final day includes a keynote speaker and panel entitled “Undocumented to Hyperdocumented: The Power of Documentation”. The keynote speaker is Dr. Aurora Chang, an expert researcher in the field of education and undocumented status. This will take place in the Nebraska Union Auditorium at 7:30m. 

After each film screening and art showcase is the opportunity to have civil and regulated discussions with peers about diversity.

This event is a wonderful way to express yourself and learn from others. Join in and enjoy the celebration!
