Be Prepared for That Summer Internship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

Internship season is just right around the corner. Whether you’ve found a golden opportunity in your hometown or you’re moving to the big city, it’s important to start planning for the transition.

Decide living arrangements ASAP. There are so many options for living for students working unpaid internships over the summer. If you’re staying in your hometown, your old room in your parent’s house is free (and you might score some free meals, too). That’s a huge money-saver. If you’re moving further away into a city or even abroad, look at websites like AirBnb for student living and monthly leases. These are better options than signing a lease at an apartment that may not even offer short term leases for the summer or paying way too much for living.

Make sure you have some sort of income whether that is a savings account or a side job such as Uber, freelancing or a bar job. Dog walking apps have been popping up in bigger cities and are super flexible to any schedule. You’d be surprised at the many different ways you can make a little extra cash to make rent or go out on the weekend.

Remember to go out and explore the city you’re in and the new people you meet. This is the time of your life and a great opportunity to learn new skills and make new connection. Wherever you end up, make the most of it and enjoy the rollercoaster.
