The new millennium brought countless changes to the world. The 2000s were welcomed with crazy new technology and trends. Many people thought we would all die before we reached the faraway year of 2001. But we survived. And it’s a good thing we did because the turbulent year of 2001 had a lot to celebrate, including a lot of great movies, many would go on to become beloved classics.

Some of the most iconic comedy movies of our childhood and the 2000s were released in 2001.

  • Shrek, the hilarious classic that is still cherished today

  • Legally Blonde, the groundbreaking comedy starring Reese Witherspoon

Both of these comedies also had themes of unlikely characters defying expectations and breaking barriers

Disney, of course, released several great movies that would be remembered and loved by millions.

  • Monsters Inc.: The amazing animated film about what is really in your closet.

  • Spy Kids: The action movie that frequented the Disney Channel show list

  • The Princess Diaries: An inspirational movie starring Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway

These three movies were loved by its viewers and have boasted sequels and prequels.

Action and drama movies had their fair share of fame in 2001. Many of these movies went on to become classics and loved by generations to this day.

  • Lord of Rings the Fellowship of the Ring: The fantasy movie based on Tolkien’s books.

  • A Knight’s Tale: Starring Heath Ledger as a peasant becoming a knight.

  • Ocean’s Eleven: The well-known action adventure.

  • The Fast and the Furious: The start of a series of movies that captivated millions.

  • A Beautiful Mind: A great romance drama film.

A lot of action and dramas from this year and others are parts of great movie series from years gone by or years to come.

And last but not least, the movie that changed the world and molded a generation. The Harry Potter series has a special place in my heart and it all started in 2001.

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: The start of a series of eight movies based on the beloved books by J.K. Rowling.

Great movies come out every year. It was by chance that I realized so many great movies happened to come out in 2001. Although 2001 was nearly two decades ago, the popular culture and movies from the time capture a time and continue to capture movie-lovers.
