Why Finding a “Big” is like the Bachelor

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Tis’ the season of recruitment! At the end of September, I decided to go through the recruitment process to join a sorority here at UNH.  Ever since I was in high school I was interested in joining one because my dad had made some of his best friends in his fraternity at Bryant University.  I’m also an only child and I’ve always wanted sisters, so I guess this is as close as I can get. Since I went through recruitment I’ve had a blast meeting older girls and girls in my pledge class.

I have also been on the hunt to find my “big sister.” For those who are not familiar with the term, “big” pretty much guides you through your years in the sorority.  I’m ecstatic to have one and it’s been a fun way to meet new girls. Usually older girls ask you to get coffee that are looking for a little and it feels like a legit date! The point of the coffee date is to become more familiar with the other girl and see if you would be a good match for a big and little sister.

The other day while I was getting coffee with a girl I met during recruitment and we were comparing the “big” “little” process to the show The Bachelor! Now let me explain, currently I have no big sister and have to search for the “one” and by that I mean a girl that I feel is the best fit.  The big sisters do the same. In addition, I have been on dates with multiple people in the same week trying to get to know them better, hmmm sound a little familiar? After a certain period of time you are revealed to your big!
