How To Stay Healthy During the Holidays

How to Stay Healthy During the Holidays:

The holidays are filled with family, friends, gifts, and lots of delicious food.  Although having all of my favorite treats is one of the best parts of the holidays, I can sometimes feel guilty about eating so unhealthy.  Below I wrote I list of guideline I follow during the holiday feasts.

1. Exercise!

Although this may feel tedious, keeping up with your workout routine when you go home for Christmas break will make you feel less guilty about those extra holiday calories.  If working out isn’t your thing, try taking classes at your gym to learn new workouts.  When I go home, I like to take a pilates and spin class to stay fit over break.  Going to the gym everyday to start off my day makes me feel that I am being healthy and productive during my time off from school.

2. Only Indulge In Your Favorite Holiday Treats

It’s not realistic to stay away from all the treats on Christmas, but only eating your favorite desserts is a more realistic goal I set for myself during the holidays.  Sometimes, it isn’t worth taking the extra chocolate chip cookies that you could get in the dining hall any other time throughout the year.  Try eating your favorite treats that you only get to have during the holiday season.

3. Portion Control

Your eyes may be bigger than your stomach during the holidays. Try taking a little of everything.  Only indulge in your favorite dishes.  Although the holidays are a time when you should be able to eat whatever you want, loading up multiple plates of food may be over doing it.  I’ll load up my plate, knowing I will never finish my meal.  Besides, having more leftovers will allow you to enjoy your Christmas feast for days to come!

4. Don’t Worry!

Although it is important to stay healthy during the break, the holidays only come once a year and it is important to enjoy yourself with family and friends.  So taking a couple of “cheat days” are sometimes necessary after a long semester!
