10 Reasons Why We Love the Boston Red Sox

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

And with a thunderous (and timely) grand slam, Shane Victorino put the Red Sox up 5-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning. This could not have come at a more opportune time, since, at the time, the Red Sox were losing 2-1. And the thought of having to face Detroit Tigers pitcher Jason Verlander, in a do-or-die Game 7, was not exactly a desire for any Red Sox fan. To avoid a match against Velander, all Red Sox Nation needed was to have Koji Uehara close the game, and we were all set. And he did just that!

YOUR BOSTON RED SOX ARE HEADING TO THE 2013 WORLD SERIES. Is there anything better than October baseball?

There are many reasons why sports fans may love the Red Sox. I mean times like this it’s hard not to love them, right?

Here are 10 reasons why I believe everyone should love the Red Sox.

1.) From worst to first. The Boston Red Sox have proved the doubters, once again. Who doesn’t love a Cinderella story?

2.)#GetBearded. We know the Tigers fans wanted to “mow” the Red Sox playoff beards off. But players like Mike Napoli have worked too damn hard to have a beard like that. They will keep growing strong, right until the end.

3.) Jacoby Ellsberry, Xander Bogaerts and Will Middlebrooks… Just to name a few players who definitely are not hard on the eyes.

4.) Fenway Park itself. Is there any better baseball stadium? No. We have the most beloved baseball stadium in America, and arguably the world. From Yawkey Way and Fenway Franks to the wooden seats, and its homey feeling, to the Green Monster, every Boston fan has a place in their heart for Fenway Park.

5.) “Every little things gonna be alright…”  Coach John Farrell has always believed in the Red Sox organization, and knew building a ‘team’ concept would bring them all together. The ‘team’ effort has been a major factor in making it this far.

6.) This is our bleepin’ city. In case you missed it in April, David Ortiz reminded us again on Saturday night that no matter what happens to the people of Boston nothing will tear us down.

7.) David Ortiz. “Big Papi” has been with us since 2003, the only player remaining from the forever-famous 2004 World Series Championship team, aka “The Idiots.” (God I loved that team).

8.) Sweet Caroline… dun-dun-dun! People can say all they want about Bostonians. We’re known as mean, arrogant and rude. But when the bottom of the 8th rolls around at Fenway every person is on their feet with their arms around their neighbor’s shoulder swaying back and forth, belting out Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline.’ And this year, for sure, “good times never seemed so good” for the Red Sox.

9.) The Jimmy Fund has been the official charity of the Boston Red Sox since 1953.  This Boston institution is part of the Dana-Farber Institute, which helps fund cancer research, while aiding families of cancer patients in need. Many of the players really step up to the plate to help promote the Jimmy Fund. They make appearances at fundraisers and bring awareness to the charity, and children’s cancer as a whole. Most importantly, many visit the Jimmy Fund Clinic (publicly and privately), making the day of young Red Sox fans suffering with cancer.

10.) Because we are Boston. People love to tear down those on top. It is normal human behavior. And Boston has been on top for the past decade or so. I mean in what other region, or state, in this country can someone as young as 18 (or even 38?) say they’ve witnessed all four of their local teams win championships? No where, but Boston. Aggregately, Boston has won two World Series (3 if things go our way), three Super Bowl Championships, one Stanley Cup championship, and even one NBA Championship! That’s seven championships since 2001. Oh, and during that time Boston teams have also appeared (and did us proud) in two other Super Bowls (2008, 2012 – both final minute losses), one NBA Championship (2010 – seven games) and one Stanly Cup Finals (2013 – six games). No other city comes close to that record of greatness. We are #BostonStrong, in more ways than one.

And with that….GO SOX!
