How to Look Smart, Even if You Don’t Know What You’re Doing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

As someone who has made it through classes with really no understanding of the material, but still managed an “A” through participation, I have to say that there is an easy science to getting a professor to see something in you that may or may not exist. This is not an advocation for never studying or a get an “A” quick at the end of the semester plan; this is an exercise in manifesting the grade you want even if that isn’t the grade you think you are qualified to get.

First and foremost you have to show up to class. This is a very simple step that can be daunting in the face of extracurricular activities, be it a sport, plans with a significant other, or just more sleep. Showing up is a fundamental part of potentially getting an insight into the material that you are having trouble with, it will also help you get an understanding of what your professor wants. Having a good relationship with your professor nearly guarantees you some leeway in due dates or advice they will give you on assignments you might be struggling with.

Another big step is to talk consistently in class and bring up any little insightful input you may have. If you are shy or have trouble with the idea of talking to a group of people who you don’t know, just remember that in any given class only a third of the students are paying attention at any given time and they aren’t necessarily who you are talking to. Try to think of a class discussion as a one on one conversation with whoever is bringing up a point at a given moment it may help you get over some anxiety.

Lastly, if you don’t think you are going to have anything insightful, just remember that relating the topic to something you do understand and pointing out the similarities or differences is a totally valid option and can help you find a way to ground yourself in the material.

Now all of this work in the classroom isn’t going to do too much if you never actually look at the material on your own or turn in the assignments. However, this effort can help you bump yourself up a letter grade without any real work.
