Five Ways to Love Yourself More

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

At the beginning of my freshman year, I found myself obsessing over the idea of meeting some incredible guy and falling head over heels in love. But after a few months passed, it seemed like almost every guy I encountered, well, sucked. I questioned myself, wondered what I was doing wrong, and downloaded Tinder one too many times. But then it hit me: My time for a relationship simply has not come because at this time in my life, my focus is meant to be elsewhere. To all of my fellow ladies who are dissatisfied with their dating life, I challenge you to ditch the hopeless romantic persona and say peace out to the guy that treats you like shit. Today, I challenge you to take the love you wish to give to another man or woman and redirect that energy to yourself. Now how will you do such a thing? Follow these 5 steps to increase the love and compassion you have for yourself, because–whether you realize it or not–you are worth it.

1. Right as you wake up think of or speak out loud 5 people you’re thankful to have in your life.

In one of my psychology classes, my professor shared with us that if we think of people we are grateful for first thing in the morning, we immediately become happier in that moment which contributes to our attitude throughout the day.

2. Read one inspirational, humorous, or powerful quote every morning.

Social media is everywhere. Instead of scrolling through pictures on Instagram or sharing funny videos on Facebook, get on Pinterest and search for all different kinds of quotes. You are bound to find one that resonates with you and fuels your motivation for the day ahead.

3. Dance. All. The. Time.

Dance by yourself, with your girl friends, dance in your car, in your dorm. Do it while you’re drunk, do it while you’re sober. I don’t care where you are or how you’re feeling, live a little, bust a move, and have some fun.

4. Stay active.

You know that group exercise class you’ve been eyeing all semester? GO. Make time, schedule it into your busy life, and take care of your health. Fitness is so much more than looking fit and healthy; it’s about feeling strong and believing that you can conquer anything you put your mind to.

5. Admire the world around you more.

I cannot stress this enough! Next time you’re walking to class, tuck your phone away and pay attention to the beauty your campus offers. Feeling more connected with nature enhances our appreciation of the environment around us and also allows us to see a greater purpose for ourselves.
