Panic in a Pandemic: How to Take Care of Your Mental Health While in Quarantine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Being on lockdown can quickly take a hit on your mental health. Here are a few things to do if you find yourself getting bored while you’re self-isolating!

Keep Busy

Our minds tend to go some pretty dark places when we are bored. Keeping that in mind, it’s important to carry out productive and/or relaxing activities to keep us at peace. As people, all of us have something special that we do to occupy our time. However, when going out isn’t an option, it’s helpful to be creative in how we spend out time. This can include studying, writing, drawing, exercising or anything you might enjoy that gives you a positive feeling.

Meditate

Just because we’re on lockdown doesn’t mean your mind itself is in a cage. We go through thousands of thoughts each day, positive and negative thoughts. We can’t stop thinking, but the point of meditation is to be at peace with our inner thoughts. When we meditate, we allow our thoughts to flow freely, not worrying about what they mean or how they came to be, but just accepting that they’re there. Meditation makes it easier to relax and make peace with all of the thoughts that run through our head. We acknowledge the thoughts we have, rather than fight them.

Keep In Touch With Family and Friends

The connections with the people we love the most can be our anchor during our hard times. For those of you who are staying at home with family, I ask you, try to spend time with them. It can be hard to get along in a crowded house, but when things are good, time spent with family can even be the best part of your day. When you’re discouraged or you’re having a bad day, your close friends are the ones that have your back. So, keep in touch if you can. Call, text, facetime etc.
