Campus Profile: Max Ackerman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

I attended Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. IMSA’s a boarding school, at first it was a little tough living on my own as a 15-year-old while typically high schoolers didn’t have to experience that until college. But living just a few feet away from my closest friends and having us all focused on the same goals made it a lot easier with this early “adult” move. With that said, the transition from there to UIC was honestly pretty easy because I was used to taking tough classes while also having to motivate myself to study and do well. Homesickness was never really a factor because I’ve learned how to live on my own. One thing that was different was the level of freedom. The degree of responsibility of going out has been tested since arriving to UIC.

I really like UIC actually, a lot more than I would have expected. I didn’t really choose the school, I chose the scholarship and GPPA program so basically UIC just came with it. However, I don’t think UIC gets enough credit for what it offers. It’s a great research institution and has so many more opportunities than its given credit for.
