October Random Acts of Kindness Challenge

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

There is something about October that makes people warm and fuzzy inside. The mornings are cooler, the days are shorter and the best holidays are just a few weeks away. It’s no better of a time to spread kindness by doing something for someone else, while expecting nothing in return. Although, being kind doesn’t come naturally for most, with some commitment and determination, anyone can make someone else’s day a little warmer and fuzzier.

Here are a few things you can do to spread kindness:

Compliment three strangers a day. Compliments are free gifts! They cost nothing and they take up zero time. They also make people feel good. Believe it or not, they will be thinking about what you said all day, and will probably share it with their friends.

Let people know they are appreciated. People love when they are appreciated. Just by sending an email to a boss, parent, sibling, roommate, or friend, a person can build confidence and honor in those around them. Thank the bus drivers by saying, “I appreciate what you do.” Acknowledge people in service industries by their name by saying, “Thank you, [their name], for your help.”  This will take you zero time and make people feel like their life and presence is valued.

Pay for someone’s gas. Yes, gas prices are a little steep, but find someone who needs gas in their vehicle to go to work so they can provide for their family or help an disabled relative.

Pay for someone’s lunch or coffee. Whether you are at Chick-fil-A or Jittery Joes, pay for a complete stranger’s meal. This is a simple thing that can go a long way.

Donate things you do not use. Declutter your space by donating old clothes, appliances, and tools to friends, family or strangers. Like the old saying goes: “ One woman’s trash, is another woman’s treasure.”

Take initiative. Wash the dishes, no matter who dirtied them. Wash your roommate’s bathroom. Wash their clothes. Offer to wash their car as well. Everyone has busy lives and sometimes chores can get pushed down to the bottom of the to-do list.

Imagine what November will be like if everyone were to do these things. No one should sit around and miss out on the best opportunity to spread kindness. The challenge is to be kind every day of this month. Try to spread as much kindness as Starbucks sells PSLs. Be sure to check back in November for the October Kindness Challenge update!
