Arbor house is a community offering long-term housing and programs to homeless pregnant women and single-mother families while they pursue goals and self-sufficiency. Arbor House also provides pregnancy testing and counseling services for free.
Her Campus hosted a toiletry drive between the University of Florida sororities, and Sigma Kappa came out on top with ten boxes of donations! Because of the chapter’s generosity, we decided to provide our readers with some background on Sigma Kappa’s special sisterhood.
Sigma Kappa Sorority was founded in 1874 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Its five founders were Mary Caffrey Low Carver, Elizabeth Gorham Hoag, Ida Mabel Fuller Pierce, Louise Helen Coburn, and Frances Elliott Mann Hall.
At the University of Florida, Sigma Kappa’s philanthropies include Alzheimer’s and Gerontology, Inherit the Earth, and the Maine and Seacoast Mission. Inherit the Earth has been a Sigma Kappa commitment to “go green” since 1992. Sigma Kappa collaborates with older citizens to help develop green service projects that benefit the environment while also focusing on their Gerontology philanthropic priority.
Sigma Kappa participates in the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” every year, and their national team raises more than $150,000 for the national Alzheimer’s Association. Sigma Kappa’s Maine and Seacoast mission was developed in honor of their founders in Maine. Each year, the sisters of Sigma Kappa collect books, clothing, gift cards, and more to send to those in need on coastal and island communities.
To raise money for all three major philanthropies, the University of Florida chapter of Sigma Kappa dedicates a week to fundraising commonly known on campus as Ultra Violet Week. During this time, the chapter has several fundraisers, such as dinners at Bento Café and events at Simply Gorgeous Gifts. This year, Sigma Kappa raised more than $1,000 over the course of the week. One of the chapter’s other well-known philanthropies is Sigma Shootout, a soccer tournament between the UF fraternities to benefit their philanthropies.
The sisters of Sigma Kappa sorority were glad to help such a beneficial cause. The University of Florida chapter of Her Campus could not be more grateful for their donations, and we know these donations will make a difference at Arbor House!
