There was a time when college merch looked the same everywhere. You could walk into a bookstore and find T-shirts and sweatshirts with the school’s name in bold lettering, a school-spirited lanyard, and maybe a plushie for your mascot.
But, the college gear marketplace looks a little different today. Now, bookstore racks overflow with apparel options, designed to appeal to nearly every aesthetic. At local malls, you might even find your school’s logo sported in shops. Sure, Forever 21 used to have some Harvard graphic tees, but now coveted brands like Free People Movement, Parke and BaubleBar offer limited-edition collections. Even pop culture icons are jumping in, with the UF Bookstore setting up a lottery just to buy a recent Hello Kitty collaboration release.Â
The craze extends well beyond game-day apparel. Squishmallows’ latest release features huggable renditions of beloved mascots in both the classic 12-inch size and as a bag charm. My full-sized Albert has already claimed permanent real estate as my go-to travel companion and study buddy, but that obsession is hardly unique.Â
Brands have been collaborating with famous faces for generations. In any marketing class, you’re bound to hear about celebrity endorsements and other social proof tactics that led to today’s influencer and collab culture. The psychology is simple — the stronger the affinity, the stronger the demand. And few institutions inspire stronger affinity than colleges and universities.
This is especially true for large schools with strong sports cultures, where the built-in audience is massive. Gator Nation alone has nearly half a million living alumni and current students representing every U.S. state and more than 100 countries. Add eager admits and the numbers only grow, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Alumni pride stretches across generations, with parents and relatives who didn’t attend UF calling themselves proud Gators.Â
Plus, you can’t forget the sports fans with little affiliation to the academic institution. People of all ages and backgrounds unite to cheer on their favorite team. A bar in New York City can be covered in as much blue and orange as a backyard in San Diego, or a living room abroad. As a result, collabs with college brands can stretch into almost any product category and still feel made for the audience.Â
Plenty of franchises have strong fandoms, from PokĂ©mon to ACOTAR, but few run as deep as institutions of higher learning. While special events and themed parties might let fans enter their favorite fantasy worlds for a night, the college experience is lived during some of the most formative years of young adulthood.Â
You might argue it’s all simply business. After all, the more college merchandise that’s available, the more publicity colleges and universities receive. And with such strong brand affinity, licensed merchandise sold at a markup boosts a business’s bottom line. Financially, partnerships with beloved institutions make perfect sense.Â
Whatever the financial incentive, these collabs tap into identity far more than a typical corporate sponsorship, especially in an era when what students wear is an extension of who they are.
College-branded apparel and accessories have become a physical artifact of the community found on campus. Yes, a vibrant and welcoming community is a marketing clichĂ© that most universities put on their brochures, but it rings true. We’ve met our friends through classes and student organizations and formed professional relationships through on-campus jobs and career programs. Do you remember the first time a then-stranger shouted “Go Gators” at you because you were wearing a Gators shirt?Â
As new collabs gain more traction, we can expect to see more schools and more products get a school-spirit spin. Pop-up trucks from brands like Edikted and Poppi visiting campuses suggest we’ll see more brands showing up where strong communities already exist. Whatever you’re into, you’ll find new reminders that every day is a great day to be a Florida Gator. Until the next release, don’t be surprised to find my Albert Squishmallow right next to my textbooks.Â
