Fashion Styles Inspired by Spring Flowers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Spring has officially sprung in Florida, which means not only a change in the weather (however small) but a transition from bulky coats to breezy sundresses. Whenever I think of spring, I tend to immediately associate the season with pastels, flowy dresses, girly fashion and blooming flowers. In honor of Mother Nature’s “spring awakening,” I compiled a list of fashion styles that were inspired by some of my favorite spring flowers.

1. Lilac – Bright, Long Earrings

When I think of the color lilac, I’m reminded of the long, pretty shape the flowers form. Bright, long earrings are therefore the perfect choice in my opinion to represent them during the springtime.

2. Tulip – Tulip Skirts

It’s only fitting that for tulips I chose the tulip skirt! Inspired by the natural curvatures and shapes of the flower, I would that a tulip skirt is a great piece to have in your spring wardrobe for a night out on the town.

3. Oakleaf Hydrangea – Ruffles

The way these flowers beautifully cascade down and on top of each other reminded me of the layered ruffles of a dress. Adding ruffles into your spring wardrobe will definitely help give you volume and a little bit of flair in your outfits.

4. Bloodroot – Slits and Shapes

This interpretation is a little more abstract, but I compared the distance of the bloodroot’s petals to that of slits and cutout shapes in a dress. While the result is a little edgier than some of the other items in the list, it certainly lives up to the unconventional name of the flower.

5. Daffodil – Yellow Sunhats

Daffodils tend to remind me somewhat of sunflowers by their cheery yellow hue, so what better way to interpret them than as a vibrant wide-brimmed sunhat? You might need one to to perk you up before the dreaded Florida heat interrupts the cool, early springtime weather.

6. Lily of the Valley – Scalloped Hems

I love how the petals of lily of the valley create cute little curved edges that instantly remind me of a scalloped hem. Scalloped hems are universally flattering on all body types, and I consider it to be both a spring and summer fashion staple.

7. Cherry Blossom – Monochromatic Pink

When cherry blossoms bloom, they bloom everywhere. In a cherry blossom-saturated area, you aren’t able to go far without encountering their famous pink petals at least once. I think it was only fitting that I use this phenomenon as justification for saying that cherry blossoms remind me of whimsical pink outfits.

8. Camellia – Full Skirts

Camellia flowers are brimming with layers and layers of petals, so I immediately thought of a full, white skirt to aptly represent this springtime flora. To get the “full” effect, I recommend buying a petticoat to put under your skirts and dresses.

9. Pansy – Duo-Toned Bows

Some may say they see a face in a pansy flower, but upon closer inspection I actually saw a bow-shape. As a result, pansy flowers made me think of duo-toned bows that you could easy clip in your hair as a lovely spring accessory.

10. Acoma Iris – Ombre Pastels

While the Acoma Iris is not inherently “ombre,” I chose to interpret the colorful border and the (tiny) dots that slowly merged into the base of the flower as an ombre effect. Ombre pastels are easily one of my favorite trends for spring weather because of the way they gives dimension to any article of clothing, especially skirts and dresses.

Spring is arguably my favorite season for fashion styles and aesthetics, despite the notorious pollen takeover that seems to happen every year. Nevertheless, I always look forward to whipping out my pastel colors and seemingly endless amounts of sundresses. Overall, I feel like there is so much inspiration you can take from the seasons, and the different interpretations we can formulate from nature is boundless.
