If there’s anything I’m addicted to, it’s food — sweet and gooey brown sugar chocolate chip cookies, spicy-baked shrimp, stuffed cheese buns, etc. It’s not hard to get my taste buds salivating; you name it, I’ll eat it. Needless to say, I waste hours of my study time oogling over the food boards on Pinterest (my second addiction) looking to add some deliciousness into my meager college student diet. “The Dish” will feature my cooking journey as I try out some of my favorite recipes that I’ve pinned to my own food board. Whether you’re craving mom’s home-cooked meals or sick of Broward Dining, I hope this blog will inspire you to try something new.

This week, I made fried honey bananas, an ideal dessert treat that taught me two things:
1. Dessert doesn’t have to be unhealthy
2. Healthy doesn’t have to be bland.

The fried honey bananas were not only tasty, but they were also made with ingredients that are beneficial for the body:

  • Coconut oil cooking spray
  • ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tablespoon of organic honey

Bananas are rich in potassium and Vitamin B-6, and they are cholesterol free. Honey and cinnamon both have individual benefits, such as promoting better blood sugar control (honey) and reducing LDL cholesterol levels (cinnamon). But they are even more powerful together; when combined, they can boost the immune system and help cure aches.

To make this simple snack, follow these steps:

  1. Cut the banana into 1/8 inch width.
  2. Mix honey and ½ tablespoon of water together in a bowl.
  3. Spray frying pan with coconut oil spray and place on stove top under medium heat.
  4. Add the bananas, and brown them for about 1-2 minutes or until golden. Flip to the other side and repeat.
  5. Once both sides are brown, turn off the stove and pour the honey mixture over the top. It should bubble.
  6. Sprinkle the cinnamon on top.

It’s quick, easy, and healthy but sure to still satisfy a sweet tooth. Enjoy!
