This week, I’m going old school with a classic staple I used to devour during my childhood summer days: dirt dessert. I’ll admit, I’m not a huge sucker for chocolate or sweets; I really have to be craving it to thoroughly enjoy a sugary treat. But serve me dirt dessert at any given time, and I’m yours. In my mind, it’s the perfect way to complete a home-cooked dinner and an ideal solution to satisfy any sweet tooth. It’s creamy and crunchy, ridiculously rich, and indulgent, yet irresistible.

The recipe I stumbled across is a more refined version of the fun dessert from your younger years that you may remember as a mound of “dirt” topped with gummy worms. For those of you who don’t know what dirt dessert is, it’s essentially crushed Oreos in a vanilla pudding and cream cheese mixture. And a plus? It’s another no-cook recipe that takes about 15 minutes to whip together!

Ingredients:

  • 8 oz. of cream cheese (softened)
  • ¼ cup of softened butter
  • 1 cup of confection sugar
  • 3 ½ cups of milk
  • 2 packages of instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 12 oz. of Cool Whip
  • 1 package of Oreos

Directions:

  1. Beat the cream cheese, sugar, and butter in a large bowl until smooth.
  2. In another bowl, whisk the milk and pudding mix for 2 minutes. Let stand for another 2 minutes until soft-set.
  3. Gradually stir the pudding mixture into the cream cheese mixture. Then gently fold in the whipped topping.
  4. Crush the Oreos and spread 1/3 of them into an ungreased dish (I used a 13-in. x 9-in. dish). Layer with half of the pudding mixture followed by half of the remaining cookies. Repeat layers.
  5. Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving so it’s nice and cold!

This recipe will result in about 20 servings, so it will last you a while. If you want to make less, just cut all the numbers in half. And if you feel like channeling your inner child, go ahead and throw some gummy worms on top! Either way, the result is pure decadence.
