College Probz: So You’ve Switched Your Major 3 Times

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Your whole life you’ve always known you wanted to be a teacher. Your family comes from a whole generation of teachers, your favorite class in high school was teacher aide and you loved teaching kids how to read. However, when it comes time to go to college to begin your path towards becoming a teacher, you realize you want to be a nurse. Now, some years have passed and it’s time to apply to nursing school, but you have a quarter-life crisis and figure out that your path to helping people may actually be through journalism.

Some may believe these situations can be easily prevented by just sitting down and really thinking about the future, but sometimes life just isn’t so clear-cut.

It’s okay if you don’t have a clear plan about how you want your life to turn out. Previous plans will change and new decisions will be made. This will all seem scary at first, but in the end, you’ll be happy you took risks and followed your instincts. Here are a few things to keep in mind when changing your major that can help you maintain your peace of mind.

1). Don’t Freak

The first thing people tend to do after changing their major for the third time is to freak out. Please, don’t do this. You should actually pat yourself on the back because you avoided a major that wasn’t fit for you. Instead of going through with something that wasn’t right, you addressed the issue and switched before it was too late.

2). Talk to Someone Other Than Your Best Friend

Your best friend convinced you not to get those bangs and advised you on how to wear scarfs in the summer, but for school advice, you should go see an adviser. Your best friend will always be your go-to person, but sometimes a professional could be more beneficial to talk to.

3).  Being Young = Making Mistakes

You must remember that your life isn’t perfect, you’re going to make mistakes. Maybe even multiple mistakes…and that’s okay. Life is about making mistakes and learning from them so that you can avoid them in the future. That’s also what college is all about. Taking different paths, making important decisions and enjoying the journey!

Don’t be afraid to take the leap and change the major. The stress you may feel about it now will be all worth it when you end up doing what you love for the rest of your life.
