Being a Journalism Major as told by Rom-Coms

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Romantic comedies seem to have a thing about the female lead take on the occupation of journalist. They may not be completely accurate in their portrayals, I mean how likely are your chances of falling in love with the source of your story? It is nice to see your future profession in action though and live through the lives of the women on the big screen. Any journalism major can relate to the struggles, triumphs and qualities of these chick flick heroines.

1. You’re now the unofficial grammar police.

Movie: Never Been Kissed

Just like Jossie Geller, you can be pretty annoying when it comes to grammar and AP Style, but you feel you have that right when you get 50 points off an assignment for those mistakes. Even while texting you are sure to use the difference you’re and your.

2. Interviewing can be exciting but also really awkward.

Movie: Trainwreck

You kinda know your stuff when you’re going into an interview and it makes you feel like an actual reporter, but it can go downhill fast when you run out of questions and can’t keep up a natural conversation.

3. You drink coffee like water.

Movie: Morning Glory

Between classes and and the news studio, you’re most likely to be found at the Starbucks line getting your fifth coffee fix for the day.

5. You hear the word “deadline” way too much.

Movie: Sex and the City

You’re always on a deadline and when it hits, it hits you hard.

6. You’ve become an expert at multitasking.

Movie: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Making phone calls, writing news stories and academic papers; you can basically do it all.

7. Internship envy is real.

Movie: The Devil Wears Prada

Whenever your fellow classmates gets a new position or internship you’re both really happy for them, but also really jealous. How did they do it!?

8. But at the end of the day you know there is nothing else you’d want to study

Movie: 13 Going on 30

Who knows if you’ll end up the next Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters or even the next Jenna Rink but this is the major that you’ve always loved and as sleepless as some nights are you’re pursuing your dream.

Keep going, journalism Collegiette™s,  and if you’re stressed, watch a romantic comedy.
