7 Ways to Actually be Rachel Green

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

This 90s Manhattan queen is girl crush material. Not simply due to her clear skin or ridiculously perfect hair, but because of her courage, determination and confidence. If you are a “Friends” fanatic and Green obsessor, you’ll love these seven ways Rachel can serve as your role model.

Break out of your comfort zone

Rachel embarked on a quest to find herself in the most fear-provoking way we know: alone. In a soiled wedding dress, she deserted her cushy past life and broke into the unknown. When she crossed the boundary of her comfort zone, she knew, somewhere deep, that it was for the best. Can you say you’ve expanded your comfort zone recently?

Follow your passions

As we all know, the first couple seasons of “Friends” narrates Rachel Green as the coffee girl. Rachel grabs “The Fear” by the horns, takes multiple, bounding leaps of faith and lands with a foot in the door into the fashion industry. This is a testament to the importance of following what makes you feel most alive and just going for it. You never know what could happen!

NEVER give up

Rachel’s appetite for success is inspiring, and she does not give in to challenges. While playing poker with the group, she receives a devastating call letting her know she was not accepted into a position she desperately wanted. With a whole lot of drive and a little luck, she is offered an even better position. This teaches us the lesson that opportunity knocks when you work hard, surround yourself with supportive people and keep a positive attitude.

Career first, BF second—independence is key

A pivotal scene in the show occurs when Ross brought a picnic to Rachel in a pressured time at her work. The iconic “break” Ross and Rachel take is driven by Rachel’s tough decision to embrace her newfound sense of independence. This decision of prioritizing her personal growth teaches us that when we find something that makes us feel fulfilled, we shouldn’t let it go.

Recognize your value

A recurring theme in this show is Rachel’s unbridled confidence in her abilities and her worth. We know Rachel by her beauty and grace and by her many suitors.  We all can recall Ross’ fatal decision to create a list of Rachel’s faults for her to accidentally read. Rachel’s reaction of refusing to give Ross her love simply proved that she would NOT put up with being degraded behind her back. Rachel knows her value as a person and a woman.

Be a good friend… and a supporting family member

Throughout the show, we see Rachel being a good roommate and a supportive, thoughtful friend. She is always there to be a shoulder to cry on or a voice of reason. Though they have had spats, namely when Rachel stole Monica’s “thunder” by kissing Ross after Monica’s engagement, the conflict always ends with admitting wrong and lots of hugs.

And of course… dress impeccably well

Because she never underestimates a good outfit on a bad day.
