Â
Recently, as I watched the American Music Awards, an interesting thought struck me: I, as a young woman, have a lot to live up to.
Mainly, there’s the beautiful Miss Katy Perry opening up the award show. With irrefutable amounts of energy and powerful vocals, she belts out her thoughts on love as she twirls around in a beautiful set on stage.
Personally, I’m a little biased. I do happen to be her self-proclaimed #1 fan, so naturally, she is nothing less than a superstar in my eyes. Whenever I watch her perform, all I can think about is how, exactly, she manages to do everything she does. Â
How does she look so flawless on stage while singing her heart out and dancing around without the slightest hint of nerves? Most of us get nervous just standing up to give a presentation to a class of 30 people, and here she is performing in front of thousands!
But then I take a step back. I’m not Katy Perry. Most of us, in fact, aren’t. We have strengths and weaknesses in different areas of our lives and, while we may be completely confident in all that we do, we are not her.
Though I’m not Katy Perry, I know that I’m a hard worker, a faithful friend, a loyal girlfriend, and an intelligent collegiette. I am my own type of superstar. Â
And so are all of you. All of you girls out there are beautiful, inside and out. You’re just as glamorous as any celebrity, and you can perform like superstars, too. That’s something we all need to remind ourselves.
We’re in college now, trudging through a stressful and difficult chapter in our lives. With finals in process, we all need a reminder that, with a little faith in ourselves, we will shine with every exam we take and paper we submit. Â
No, we won’t be twirling around on stage performing for thousands of people, but we will be exercising our knowledge and showing the world what we can do. This is the time to prove, to others and to ourselves, just how brilliant we are and just how hard we’ve worked. Â
Too many times, young women are caught up in the idea of perfection, obsessing over the qualities of celebrities that they wish they possessed. However, not everyone can possess the same set of qualities. We can’t all be Katy Perry, but we can all be amazing.
So here’s what I would like to tell all of you…
Do your best in all that you do. Put the time into your work. Always have confidence. Challenge yourself. Believe in yourself. Love yourself for who you are.
We’re not perfect, but the only thing we have to live up to is the standards we set for being the women we were born to be – our lovely, smart, genuine selves. Real superstars.
