“The True Cost” is a groundbreaking documentary that exposes the consequences of a society that thrives on fast fashion. The term “fast fashion” refers to “a phenomenon in the fashion industry whereby production processes are expedited in order to get new trends to the market as quickly and cheaply as possible” (“Fast Fashion Investopedia, 2016). As consumers, we tend to forget to question where our clothes come from and where they end up once they are “out of style” and discarded. The True Cost displays the detrimental environmental and health effects of fast fashion on a global scale.
Here are some of the eye-opening facts I learned from this film:
1. The fashion industry is world’s second cause of pollution today.
Right next to the oil industry.
A majority of these workers are getting paid less than $3 per day.
Most of which are non-biodegradable, and therefore sit in landfills for years and emit harmful gases into the air.
