Is Trying To Be Happy Actually Making You Sad?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

Happiness is an important and beautiful part of life. A lot of people feel that true happiness will arrive once some goal in life is achieved and this can set people up for disappointment if that goal isn’t achieved in the way expected or even at all. They also believe that more happiness leads to a better and more enjoyable life however this isn’t entirely true. Constantly being on the hunt, searching for it can actually make you sad because you may get this feeling that if you stop trying to be happy, especially when times are rough, you’ll be unhappy instead and miss all the moments that have just as much potential to make you happy with much less draining effort.

One way to combat this is to appreciate the little things in life. This could be as simple as taking a walk, having your favorite snack, drinking hot chocolate, enjoying laughter. Simply appreciating little things in life rather than waiting for some grand event in your life will allow you to feel happiness natural. To do this focus your energy on positive despite the negative that may or may not be surrounding you. Live in the present, find the beauty of and relish in every moment.

Happiness should be the journey rather than the destination. It doesn’t have to be forced and it’s a wonderful thing when you finally realize that happiness is inside you rather than outside of you; that you and only you alone have the power to make yourself genuinely happy.

Hi, Collegiettes! I'm Carmen, a Communication major at University of California, Santa Barbara and one of two Campus Correspondents for UCSB. I would love to one day work in either fashion, food, tech, financial services or philanthropy. My dream is to find a job that somehow combines several of those elements. Until I get there, I'll be munching on copious amounts of Trader Joe's dried mango, jamming out to my man, Frank Sinatra, and focusing on creating intriguing content! If you like my writing, talk to me. ;)
