Karol G’s Coachella Recap
On Sunday, April 12th, Grammy-winning Colombian artist Karol G took the stage for her first headlining performance. Throughout the set, she was accompanied by techno lighting, fireworks, and culturally inspired outfits.
Her performance carries added significance in the context of the current political climate in the United States, particularly in its celebration of Latin identity and representation.
Highlighting the significance of the moment, Karol reflected on her milestone, telling the crowd, “I’m Carolina Giraldo Navarro from Medellin, Colombia, and today, I am the first Latina woman to headline at Coachella.”
She followed by emphasizing the importance of community, stating, “I just want to say that before me, there were so many great Latino artists. Legendary Latino artists that gave me an opportunity to be here tonight. So this is not just about me. This is about my Latino community. This is about my people. I just want everyone to feel proud of where you come from. Please. Don’t feel fear. Feel proud. Levanten esas banderas (lift those flags).”
Weekend One
On Weekend One, Karol G opened her set with “Latina Forever,” immediately establishing a theme centered on Latin identity and pride. Throughout her performance, she incorporated an all-female mariachi band, blending traditional Latin music elements into the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The band was prominently featured during her performance of “El Son de la Negra,”a traditional mariachi song.
The performance featured notable guest appearances, including Becky G, who joined her onstage to perform “MAMIII,” Wisin, as well as Greg Gonzalez of Cigarettes After Sex. The collaborations highlighted the cross-cultural representation of her music.
Becky G took a stand as she closed out “MAMIII,” addressing the current global and social issues, which added a more political dimension to the performance. She reminded her audience, “Que viva México, Que viva Colombia, y a todos nuestros inmigrantes. Te queremos mucho.”
Throughout the performance, Karol G used her wardrobe as a form of cultural expression, incorporating the colors of the Colombian flag to highlight her heritage and reinforce a sense of pride.
This display of cultural pride extended beyond the stage, as many fans wore outfits featuring religious and cultural symbols, including the Virgin Mary. The crowd stood in unison, proudly waving their flags in celebration.
Weekend two
During Weekend Two, Karol G delivered a powerful closing performance. She opened her set with the words “Latina Forever,” written across the big screens. She followed this opening with her song “Latina Forever,” immediately setting the tone for a night centered on empowerment.
The performance featured several high-profile artist appearances including, Peso Pluma, J Balvin, and Ryan Castro. J Balvin’s appearance was particularly symbolic, as he wore a jacket in the colors of the Colombian flag with an image of Christ on the back. He wore this in pride as he sang, “La Cancion”, “MI GENTE”, “In Da Ghetto”, and his song featuring Ryan Castro, “SANKA.”
Throughout the set, the audience played an active role in the atmosphere, lighting up Coachella Valley with many fans waving flags from across Latin America. This created a shared sense of unity between Karol G and her audience.
Becky G also returned to the stage, sharing her song “MAMIII,”alongside Karol G. Echoing the message she delivered during Weekend One.
Karol G’s Weekend Two performance not only amplified Latin culture but also served as a moment for the crowd to be involved as well. By closing out both weekends to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival as a whole, she solidified the historical significance of her headlining set. Also, being given the opportunity to announce her tour, “Viajando Por El Mundo Tropitour.”
