What To Wear To Your Next Interview (Hint: You Might Already Own It)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Interviews can be stressful enough, and if you’re like me, the questions begin before the interview even starts. What are they going to ask? Am I prepared enough? What am I going to wear? For most college students, a blazer and slacks isn’t something that fits in their dorm room closet. While we may not be adhering to 2010 fashion trends anymore, you might still have a couple things in your closet that fit under the illusive definition of business casual.

Pull out your Amazon body suit.

My square-neck long sleeve bodysuit has made it to every single interview that I have had, and it has never let me down. A neutral colored top with a structured neckline and decent coverage goes with any color or style pants, even if they’re your pajama pants from that morning (I love a zoom interview). This staple makes for the perfect stand alone top, or undershirt to a blazer, and will keep you comfortable as you focus on what makes you a top applicant.

That oversized blazer you bought? textbook business casual.

Oversized blazers are my favorite dying trend. Although you might be opting for a leather jacket nowadays, that blazer you have sitting in the back of your closet can elevate your interview attire to the next level. Unbuttoned and with a matching pant, this brings an added level of professionalism, and the potential to make a statement with your outfit. Even if your blazer is hot pink, for the right job and in the right setting, this is the perfect opportunity for a pop of color that lets your personality shine through.

Step into your cute pair of loafers or kitten heels.

Loafers aren’t just an old-man shoe anymore; these recent shoe trends make for a great alternative to your everyday sneaker. If you don’t have either of these items in your closet yet, there are always great options in the Target shoe section, often for under 20 bucks. A professional shoe is a must with an outfit that is showcasing how seriously you are taking your potential position.

The pleated pant trend may just save you a trip to the mall.

Pants are arguably the most important aspect of the full business casual outfit. Even if you don’t have a blazer, tailored pants can make the difference between looking professional, and looking like you would on any other occasion. Places like Abercrombie, Zara, Aritzia, and even Target have great options that can help you create the perfect base for your outfit.

Confidence can be a make or break factor in any interview, and walking in with an outfit you feel good about can be just as important as how you prepare. Presenting yourself well, and in a way that showcases your uniqueness and personality, is a great way to make yourself stand out in an otherwise monotonous process. So walk into your next interview with confidence, and in an outfit that makes you feel good. Who knows – you might already have all of the pieces that you need in your closet.
