Loving Myself This Valentine’s Day: A Love Letter To Myself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

True self-love is a difficult thing to achieve, and everyone struggles with it in some form or another. Societal standards and trends influence everything we do, so it is no surprise that many people find themselves feeling as if they are missing something or are inferior to others. However, that does not mean there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You really can learn to love yourself. It may be a very long process, but the reward is so worth it.

I am still on the path to true self love, but I am getting closer with each and every step. Writing is especially a great tool for me to self-reflect and heal, so I decided to write a love letter (in poetry format) to myself.

Dear Kristin,

Life is not always filled with rainbows and fun.

Things can both grow and wither under the sun.

Your days will not always be so bright and warm.

Sometimes the light fades to make way for a storm.

You might see yourself as being incomplete,

but nothing’s missing from your head to your feet.

Take a look in the mirror, open your eyes,

Do not be afraid to rip off your disguise.

The thing you are hiding from is your mind.

Come out of the dark and see what you can find.

Tear open the curtains and let in the light.

Take a deep breath, relax, and adjust your sight.

Take in the person standing there, brave and tall

– that is your authentic true self after all.

She’s everything you ever wanted and more.

You just never realized it before.

You do not need anyone or anything

to make you feel more like a human being.

You are so amazing, wonderful, and kind

–entire galaxies occupy your mind.

The twinkle in your eyes could light up the sky,

and pave the way for your hopes and dreams to fly.

Your humor never fails to make others laugh,

and your kind heart looks out for others’ behalf.

There are so many things that make you unique,

so do not be afraid to stand up and speak.

Let the entire world know who you are;

be your true self and shine like a fiery star.

As we each try to move towards self-care, it is important to do some self-reflecting and to find the outlet that works best for you.

Kristin is a fourth year MCDB major and Film minor who loves to create art and bring a smile to people's faces. You can probably find her at the beach or in bed. Oh, and she is in love with cookies and cartoons.
