UCLA students are dedicated to their academic success but let’s be real, at times we can become homework-aholics. The quarter system leads many of us to become entrenched in the UCLA campus bubble, forgetting that Los Angeles has an endless amount of thrill beyond getting our assignment in before 11:59pm. So, if the upcoming finals week has you feeling burnt out, take this as your sign to step back and avoid your homework (without having to worry about your bank account)!
Food
My latest obsession has been Layla’s Bagels located only 15 minutes away from the UCLA campus in Beverly Hills. It is a fun escape from Westwood that has free two hour parking across the street and very Instagram-able eats! My go-to order is getting half of the laika (lox) on an everything bagel and half of the pre-jam (seasonal fruit) on their plain bagel. These sourdough bagels leave me excited to plan the next time I can come back before I even reach my car.
Another favorite late night escape of mine has been to go to the Erewhon tonic bar. Erewhon may be known mostly for their delicious smoothies but I cannot say enough good things about their softserve. As an ice cream lover I find myself craving a Hailey’s Way Soft Serve at least once a week. Even though Erewhon still can be pricey the soft serve does not come with the same price tag as the smoothies. Paying a visit makes you feel like high class LA without having to sacrifice a pay check.
If you are hoping to stay local to Westwood a matcha is always my first pick. Of the many coffee shops to visit, my friends and I find Alfred’s the most enjoyable atmosphere. With the bright colors, plants, and killer playlist I know my iced vanilla matcha and I can take on any stressful day.
Fresh Air
If you aren’t hungry but still craving a moment to touch some grass I highly recommend going on a hike. With such a diverse ecosystem that surrounds Los Angeles- from beaches to mountains to deserts- there is a hike for everyone. Recently I went on a hiking trail called the Ferndell Trail near the Griffith Observatory and had the best time. The hike is uphill but definitely manageable, lasting an hour and a half round trip accompanied by views of the Hollywood sign and the Los Angeles skyline.
At times when a hike can seem too exhaustive and you would rather do something smaller, go check out the UCLA Botanical Gardens. Located on campus but secluded from student life you can find a variety of flora and fauna that makes you feel as though you’ve transported yourself out of Westwood. Trade your sterile visit to the BioMedical Library for a breathtaking view of nature.
Another way to break the UCLA bubble is by taking a trip to the Brentwood Farmers Market. Hosted every Sunday from 9am to 2pm at 741 you can find an abundance of local businesses selling fresh produce and homemade sweet treats. I always appreciate how lively it is here with kind smiling people enjoying the sun and free samples! I never leave without trying something new or making friends with a new vendor.
FINE ARTS
At times when homework becomes too much I look for ways to stimulate the creative side of my brain, I always find myself thriving in art museums. I appreciate the attention to detail each artist has taken and pay even closer attention to how it doesn’t cost me a penny to visit. One museum that I have not attended yet but is local to UCLA is the Fowler Museum. With a permanent collection of silver on display and rotating cultural exhibits, I will be sure to plan a trip in the next few weeks.
Another art museum that branches a bit further into Westwood is the Hammer Museum. With many extensive collections there is sure to be a piece of art for any attendee. The Hammer brings a calming aura over me due to its bright walls and spacious layout. It leaves plenty of space for my mind to wander and take in all of the beauty.
A personal favorite of mine and one of the most well known places for fine art in Los Angeles is the Getty Museum. Being only one exit away from UCLA, the Getty’s convenience is undeniable. With an everrotating cycle of artists I can always assure I will be seeing a new piece of art on my next visit. Most prominently known for its art that is well kept inside the Getty does not get enough love for the sculptures and scenery that also surround the outside of the exhibits. A mountain view and a creative mind are enough to put my mind at ease when homework is the last thing I want to think about.
It is important to avoid your homework and take these brain breaks that way you have memories to look back on besides your all nighters in Powell. So if ever in doubt go try one of these affordable food options, get some fresh air, and maybe visit a place of fine arts. Trust me- LA isn’t going anywhere, but your time at UCLA is, so give yourself permission to enjoy every second of it.
