The 2026 midterm elections are less than two months away, and the current political landscape is entering an era in U.S. politics that is even more competitive than usual. Right now, Republicans hold majorities in the House and the Senate, but community sentiment and primary results suggest they may lose control of both. This is due to major concerns about how the Trump Administration has been run growing, and voters are getting desperate. Issues like the cost of living, gas, war, immigration, and the environment have been weighing on Americans for the past two months as they continue to struggle, and those issues will likely show up at the polls.

Many voters are struggling with affordability and feel the president isn’t focused on the right issues, especially after he received approval from Congress to build a ballroom in the White House. This may be one of the many reasons polling suggests that people want Democratic representation in Congress, and their chances improve as the midterms get closer.

Along with this news came a viral clip of Vice President JD Vance on the All-In podcast asking voters for “another chance.” This gained popularity because he insinuates that the Trump Administration has failed to keep its promises, while President Trump argues that America has never been better. As he pleads for a few more years, voters grow more impatient, as they have not seen what they were promised during the 2024 campaigns. Even with the vice president listing the administration’s accomplishments, the clip felt more like a diss than an endorsement.

President Trump also dropped a controversial bombshell at the GOP’s midterm convention in Dallas, where he said that he would give $5000 to every U.S. adult citizen if Republicans win. This offer raised serious concerns, with many arguing it should be considered illegal bribery. Additionally, Congress would have to approve the payment, which is unrealistic given that his last two dividends were denied.

Byron Donalds, the Republican nominee for Florida governor, was notably endorsed by the president, and he made sure to include that in his campaign. His close ties to the president were featured on his website but have since been removed. It seems that Donalds has wiped everything that has to do with Trump from his website. He even replaced his top priority from “Enact the Trump Agenda” to “Affordability”. This is most likely because of Trump’s falling approval rating and fear of being dragged into the projected Republican losses in November.

Apart from the issues with affordability, many are deeply concerned about the war in Iran. President Trump has not shown any signs of backing down from this conflict. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced at the United Nations General Assembly that Iran would not surrender despite any military or economic pressures. At the same event, President Trump threatened Tehran with “annihilation” if they do not reach a deal with the U.S. The ongoing pressure makes voters more impatient with a war that affects everyone, especially financially, while the president claims it is a small price to pay.

As the midterms get closer, controversial political headlines seem to be growing. The latest is that three major news outlets were banned from reporting in the White House. The president barred them, claiming they were being unfair in what they were covering. Some believe he wants more favorable headlines heading into the midterms, but the move has drawn significant negative attention to the administration. Politico, CNN, and MS NOW planned to sue, claiming it directly violates the First Amendment. Several other major media outlets even stood in solidarity with the banned channels, and President Trump’s image was noticeably absent from the media. The latest update is that a Judge overturned the ban.

CNN reporter Betsy Klein was denied access at the White House on Saturday morning and her press pass was seized, one day after President Donald Trump announced that he was “banning” CNN, MS NOW and Politico.
