Four Spooky Treats for Your Halloween Guests

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Every Halloween season people are overloaded with unique costume ideas and DIY tutorials to get the perfect scary makeup, but what a host really needs to throw the perfect Halloween party isn’t clothing, it’s themed treats for all of your guests! Add your own scary twist on food for your friends and family this year with these 4 easy recipes for Halloween treats.

My mom has been making this spooky desert every Halloween since I was in elementary school, and I’m going to start this list off with my favorite: Graveyard Brownies

Graveyard Brownies Recipe:

What you’ll need:

  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp of Baking Soda
  • 2/3 cups of Cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • 1 cup of Flour
  • 1/2 tsp of Salt
  • 2 cups of Sugar
  • 1 tsp of Vanilla
  • 1 cup of Butter
  • non-stick safe bowl (I use 9X13 inch)
  • non-stick cooking spray

Directions:

  1. Preheat ovenn to 350 F
  2. Spray the 9X13 inch non-stick baking dish with a non-stick cooking spray
  3. Put the butter in a microwave safe bowl and melt the butter in a microwave. Mix the cocoa powder with the butter. Whisk the eggs, sugar, and vanilla together in a large bowl. Add the butter and cocoa mixture to the egg and mix so everything is combined. Add flour, salt, and baking powder to the liquid mixture, and stir until combined (don’t overmix, just make sure they’re combined!)
  4. Pour the brownie batter into the baking dish, put in the oven on the middle rack and bake for 25 minutes. (Make sure you use the middle rack and not the top one or else the brownies will turn out more cakelike)
  5. When the brownie cools down, cut into squares after decoration

Decoration Directions:

  1. Wait for brownies to cool down completely
  2. Spread chocolate or fudge icing across brownies
  3. Cut brownies into rectangles as this will be the grave site/coffins (Get creative on the shape if you want to resemble a coffin or keep it classic with rectangles!)
  4. Break off the precut rectangles of a Hershey chocolate bar (Optional: Decorate flat side of Hershey chocolate with icing gel to resemble a head stone)
  5. Insert Hershey Chocolate bar vertically on brownie to resemble a head stone
  6. Add a pumpkin candy corn at base of headstone for detail
  7. Mix green food coloring and coconut to make grass
  8. Lay coconut grass on serving plate and place brownies in rows (feel free to add the grass first as it will turn out much neater than in my picture above)
  9. Serve and enjoy!

The next recipe has 2 main parts: the bread-spider and the artichoke dip as filling. It served 15 people as well! (4 1/2 cups of dip)

Spider-bread and Artichoke Dip Recipe:

Artichoke Dip:

What you’ll need:

  • 2 cups of parmesan cheese
  • 1 ten ounce box of frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained of excess liquid
  • 14 ounce can of artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
  • 2/3 cup of sour cream
  • 1 cup of cream cheese
  • 1/3 cup of mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons of minced garlic

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375F
  2. Mix together parmesan cheese, spinach, and artichoke hearts
  3. Combine remaining ingredients and mix with spinach mixture
  4. Bake for 20-30 minutes

Bread-Spider

What you’ll need:

  • Pumpernickel bread bowl
  • Pumpernickel large roll for spider’s head
  • Pumpernickel bread sticks for legs
  • Toothpicks

There is no specific recipe for pumpernickel bread because, as previously stated, my family has been making these recipes since I was little and we have never made the pumpernickel bread from scratch, so I can’t swear by any recipe I give you. I prefer to take the easy way out when it comes to baking bread but feel free to make some by scratch!

Directions:

  1. Hollow out pumpernickel bread bowl (save excess bread for dipping in the artichoke dip later)
  2. Attach pumpernickel break roll to bowl with toothpicks and use raisins for eyes
  3. Attach pumpernickel bread sticks for legs with toothpicks (Also use legs for dipping)
  4. Add artichoke dip to hollowed out spider body

The third recipe is another favorite of mine; witch finger appetizers!

Witch Fingers:

What you’ll need

  • Bread sticks ( I recommend Pop ‘n Fresh Dough bread sticks)
  • Marinara sauce
  • Pepperoni
  • Almonds (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325F
  2. Cut each bread stick in half to create the fingers
  3. Roll bread sticks flat
  4. Use knife to cut lines for the knuckles and any added detail you want
  5. Add pepperoni piece as fingernail and add almonds on top if you want
  6. Bake until bread is golden brown, about 20-25 minutes
  7. Add marinara into dip bowl or center of plate and serve!

The last Halloween treat is an Sherbet based drink! It’s a unique alternative to regular soda and will give your party a personal touch!

Sherbet Fruit Punch:

What you’ll need:

  • 1 gallon orange Sherbet
  • 1 gallon raspberry Sherbet
  • 2 liters of fruit punch
  • 2 liters of Sprite
  • Large punch bowl
  • Ladle to serve

Directions:

  1. Mix as much punch as your punch bowl is capable of holding and mix more when you run out! Just keep the ratios fairly even

And that’s it! I included a Sherbet punch and a Witch Finger picture from others as I have not yet made the recipes this year, but I know you will love all 4! And I must give a special thanks to my mom for providing me these four recipes that I grew up helping make (and helping eat)! So I hope you all enjoy these 4 easy recipes to add some scary character to your Halloween party this year!
