Happiness seems to be one of the most mysterious words of this era- many people want to know how to be happy, loads of books try to tell people how to be happy, and tons of websites include articles overflowing with information on the same topic. But do they actually work? Maybe, but I think the easiest way to be happy is to change the way we think, and what we think about.

1. Stop taking life for granted

It’s obvious that most people aren’t in the habit of appreciating the most valuable things in their lives. Instead, they spent time thinking about the things that don’t even matter. We struggle about what we wear to school and what we can do to save money for hours on end. But how often do we spend time thinking about the most valuable things in life? How often do we think about our families, our lives, our bodies and mental conditions, our connections with friends? We have to realize that if we lose those most valuable things in life, they will never be back again. I’ve seen many people take their parents for granted and never show gratitude to them, because they think that there will always be a next time. One day, when their parents are gone, they will feel pain and regret for the rest of their lives. We have to realize that there won’t always be a next time, and sometimes if you lose the chance once, you lose it forever.

2. Change your perceptions about life

Our mind is like a coin- there are always two sides of it. You can choose to focus on the positive side, or you will be stuck in the negative side and be unhappy. We should always choose something good to focus on and mark it as the highlight of our day. Those tiny petty things such as bills and traffic can sometimes stack up and mess with our minds, causing us to have negative thoughts about our lives. Thus, throw away all those worries about the little things and believe that in the end, they will all be solved.

3. Focus on the present

Sometimes, we tend to overthink the future instead of taking a moment to enjoy what we have right in the moment. If you are already stressed and you suddenly start to think about what you need to do in the future, all pressure will add up. If we can take the time to think about what we already have right in this moment, we might actually be happy about our accomplishments. All in all, the path to happiness is really not that big of the mystery. We just need to slow down our pace in this busy world and enjoy our accomplishments. We need to show our gratitude and stop overthinking- and then, maybe, we will be happy.
