5 Hints to Thrive This Spring Quarter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

The week of my mental relief is over, and it is time to go back to the cow town. We have enjoyed the cozy beds, exquisite food, and everything else spring break offered. Even though I have been reluctant to log back onto Canvas, I feel it is necessary to reflect on my last quarter. When you are sad about leaving your vacation behind, a smooth transition to a successful quarter can help mend the pain. Here are some tips to help bounce back to better your mental health this quarter.

1. Take your time during the first days of the quarter.

Don’t overwhelm yourself right away because it might lead to a mental breakdown. I know it can be difficult to switch the vibe swiftly from spring break to studying. We might feel pressured to start studying immediately, but don’t rush into things. The first week, otherwise known as syllabus week, helps give you a chance to take everything in before diving into your hectic schedule. Just pace yourself.

2. Take a nap and sleep well.

Try not to pull all-nighters on regular weekdays, no matter the reason. Last quarter I procrastinated and left all the work undone until the deadline. This meant I had to stay up late to finish all my homework. While readings accumulated, I found myself trapped in a whirlwind of multitasking. Through this, all my work was losing its quality. I couldn’t get enough sleep last quarter which led to me failing my class. It became a vicious cycle, which is why it is so important to get the right amount of sleep.

3. Keep your body in shape.

The temperature is increasing, leaves are growing, flowers are blooming, and there will be sunshine glowing on you. Spring and summer make me feel like life starts over again. It is the best time to show your curves and sunbathe! It’s time to stop eating when you’re not hungry, and to wake up and grab your workout clothes. With the oncoming season of fresh produce, eat your fruits and veggies! Exercise is necessary too to keep your body healthy. You can swing by the new opening of ARC to help you stay in shape.

4. Don’t enroll in too many units.

Does checking your daily schedule make you feel stressed out? Do you have spare time to chill in between classes? Do you have time to socialize and eat? If the answer is no, you might have to ponder over your registered courses and start dropping 1 or 2 of them. Girls, find a balance between success and time management. We have to maintain a healthy relationship with ourselves. Sometimes 14-17 units can be the best choice.

5. Always have an upbeat attitude!

No matter what, sweetie ─ it’s spring! If you are down and exhausted, just go outside to feel the breeze and the sunlight. Go to the Arboretum to feed the ducks and hear the birdsong. You can treat yourself to something you deserve and have been craving. You got this, girl! Everything will be fine if you are positive. Good luck to everyone during this new spring quarter. Whoop whoop!
