Taylor Jenkins Reid’s historical fiction novel, Daisy Jones & The Six took the literary world by a storm when it first debuted in 2019, and since then, it has grown in popularity. The novel, which tells the story of a fictional 1970’s rock band through a transcript of interviews with each character, gained even more traction on TikTok and was added to Reese Witherspoon’s Reece’s Book Club. Just a few months after the novel was released, it was announced that the book would be adapted into an Amazon Prime limited series, in collaboration with Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine

It has been a long road since production started five years ago; from coordinating the music with the series itself, to COVID-19 threatening to shut down the project all together, we are finally approaching the release of this highly anticipated show.

I first read the book in 2021 and I remember discussing it with my friends. Taylor Jenkins Reid’s ability to write books about fictional characters that feel so real is incredibly mesmerizing. From Daisy Jones to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, TJR creates complex characters with depth that leave me feeling like I have parted with a dear friend by the time I finish the book.

I had an opportunity to attend the Los Angeles premiere of Daisy Jones & The Six at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on February 23. Two of my friends and I left Riverside, picked up our friend from UCLA and headed to the premiere in our best 70’s attire. Despite the extremely cold and rainy weather, the four of us were beyond thrilled to get a sneak peak at the upcoming series. We checked in, grabbed our tickets, and headed into the historic theater. As we were ushered to our seats, the cast and crew were on the step and repeat in front of the theater. We grabbed our complimentary snacks and got settled in for the show to start. The showrunners, writers, and executives gave a brief introduction and speech thanking all of the people that contributed to making the series possible. The lights dimmed and the audience roared as the first episode of Daisy Jones & The Six began to play on the big screen.

The experience was one I will never forget: getting to see one of my favorite books come to life in a historic theater with the cast and crew scattered in throughout the rows behind me was magical. They played two episodes, each beautifully produced and exactly how I envisioned. The cast–which includes Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Suki Waterhouse, Camila Marrone, Will Harrison, Sebastian Chacon, and Josh Whitehouse– gave a stellar performance. The music transported the audience to the 1970’s and the writing had pockets of romance, comedy, yet captured the dark side of being a rock star. The cast also recorded an album that includes songs from the book/series which will be available on vinyl on March 3. For now, there are two songs from the series available to stream: “Regret Me,” and “Look At Us Now (Honeycomb).”

The first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six premieres on Amazon Prime on March 3, 2023, with episodes being released on Fridays for the weeks following.
